Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays (Discourse Chronicle)
[Hopefully all of my readers and commenters are enjoying a good holiday with loved ones. Thus far, I managed to see many of my close friends, some of whom are former professors and others are coming soon for a visit as well.
Apparently, there is a debate about whether or not to say “Merry Christmas” or “Happy Holidays” and I am following it vaguely. I like to think that I use a simple solution for this dilemma. If I am around people I know who are religious, then I say “Merry Christmas.” If I am around people I know less well, then I say “Happy Holidays.” BK]

Don’t waste your energy and effort on that debate…it is stupid and pointless.
And on that note, Happy Merry Christmas Holidays to you!
Thanks, Josh! Happy New Year!
I agree with what you said, Bobby. But at the same time, jesus did preach and teach to include all and not to shun any away. Plus in this day and age, when discrimination and the like are common place, I think “Happy Holidays” is more “politically correct”–but who cares about being PC! lol!
Hi Bobby! A list I subscribe to had a huge discussion about this. Hundreds of posts! All women, all fairly liberal politically, some Christian, most not, and most felt that the debate was one of those stirred up to attempt to deflect attention from real issues, like war, and corruption in the Congress and the Executive. I didn’t think it really worked, did you?
Beth, I remember seeing this story covered on NBC Nightly News, which I understood as a human interest piece. Due to its trivial nature, though, I am inclined to believe it as a ruse calling attention away from the Bush Administration. I thought it worked until I saw Bill O’Reilly on Late Night with David Letterman last night. After all, the Nixon Administration called for no Christmas lights one year and made a huge deal about poisoned red M&Ms.
Lou, I am sure if we say any phrase, then it will be offensive to someone. I thought about “Season’s Greetings” but that conjured images of someone without winter throwing a fit.
LOL! Too true Bobby, too true. I just don’t see what the big deal is, myself. I try to include everyone in the festive time of year (especially since Christ wasn’t born till March as the shepards wouldn’t have been out in the field with sheep towards the end of december…)
