Joshua Ortega Talks “Star Trek” Manga (Comic Book Resources)

Tokyopop’s recent announcement of a new “Star Trek” manga, set during the time line of the original series (referred to as “TOS” by fans) featuring Captain Kirk & Spock, raised the eyebrows of many fans, who hadn’t quite expected a new comic book to commemorate the franchise’s 40th anniversary. With all television and movie projects on hold, “Star Trek” has seen better days, but writer Joshua Ortega is hoping to remind fans just why they fell in love with the adventures of the starship Enterprise (and all those other ships too).

I was prompted to comment on this because a few hours ago I just finished Enterprise, a Trek novel published in the 80s, telling the story of Kirk’s first command on the Enterprise.

I enjoyed the photonovels as a kid — still shots from the shows, with superimposed speech bubbles. But this could be very interesting… the Star Trek animated series was hampered by cheesey animation, but the medium allowed the writers to experiment much more freely in terms of setting and the design of alien characters. While the storylines were clipped to fit into the half-hour format, the stories were the basis for some good early Trek fiction. I read the prose versions of a few of the animated shows before I saw them on TV, and they really stand with some of the best of TOS.

Of course, what I really want is a TOS – themed mod of Half-Life, so I can walk around the Enterprise.

Dennis, I admit that I thought of you when posting about Trek. Personally, I want a holodeck, but then I am afraid it might become like Robert Nozick’s Experience Machine or the Matrix.
