Norwalk resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Elizabeth C. Smith of Norwalk has received the Phi Delta Kappa Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. She will receive $1,000 towards tuition for the 2016-2017 academic year.

Established by the Firelands College Chapter #1382 Phi Delta Kappa Fraternity, this scholarship is available to students at either campus of BGSU pursuing a teaching degree. Graduates of a high school in Huron, Erie, or Ottawa counties who have completed a minimum of 24 credit hours are eligible.

Smith is a 2015 graduate of St. Paul High School, Norwalk. She was the treasurer of the National Honor Society. She was the basketball team captain and received the Basketball Coaches Award. She also received a letter in basketball, softball, cross country, and academics. She was a board member for Saints Softball and United Fund Students. Smith was a member of Key Club, Student Council, Prom Committee, Make-A-Difference Day, Teens Encounter Christ, and Junior Project Leadership. She received an Ace Award and a Fireland’s Conference 1st Team All-Academic Award. She was a eucharistic minister and a team leader for Kairos and Confirmation Retreat.

She is a sophomore majoring in inclusive early childhood education at BGSU Firelands.

She is the daughter of Kelly and Mike Smith of Norwalk.

Sandusky resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Myroslava Hiser of Sandusky has received the George L. Mylander Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. She will receive $2,282 towards tuition for the 2016-2017 academic year.

This scholarship is offered to a student who is a resident of Sandusky or other Erie County communities.

Hiser is a 2010 graduate of Lyceum #1 in Poltava, Ukraine.

She is a sophomore majoring in computer science at BGSU Firelands where she is on the Dean’s List and is secretary of the math club. She has received a certificate of recognition for volunteering in Woman in STEM and for Firelands 50th Anniversary Community Festival.

Berlin Heights resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Patrick G. Walker III of Berlin Heights has received the George L. Mylander Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. He will receive $2,282 towards tuition for the 2016-2017 academic year.

This scholarship is offered to a student who is a resident of Sandusky or other Erie County communities.

Walker is a 2014 graduate of Goose Creek High School, South Carolina. He was Welder of the Year, Math Club president, and a founding member of the Philosophy Club.

He is a sophomore majoring in science at BGSU Firelands.

He is the son of Kimberly Walker of Berlin Heights and the late Patrick Walker, Jr.

Norwalk resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Heather Ann Chapman of Norwalk has received the Mack Snyder Rau Memorial Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. She will receive $904 towards tuition for the 2016-2017 academic year.

This endowed scholarship was given in memory of Mack Snyder Rau by Alice W. Rau, David A. Rau and Norman D. Rau. The scholarship is made available to students pursuing a bachelor of liberal studies degree who are from Erie County. Both freshman and continuing students are eligible. A “C+” average, school and community activities, and financial need are considerations for this award.

Chapman is a 1992 graduate of Norwalk High School.

She is a senior majoring in applied health science with a specialization in respiratory care at BGSU Firelands.

She is the daughter of Edward Chapman, Jr. of Norwalk and the late Dusella Chapman.

Berlin Heights resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Amanda Marie Vartorella of Berlin Heights has received the Robert E. Harned Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. She will receive $673 towards tuition for the 2016-2017 academic year.

The Robert E. Harned Art Scholarship was created in 1994 as an endowed fund through the estate of Harriet J. Harned to honor her late son Robert and the time he enjoyed at BGSU Firelands. The scholarship is awarded to a student in the art department at BGSU Firelands. Art department faculty select the recipient based on need and motivation.

Vartorella is a 2015 graduate of Edison High School where she was on the Dean’s List. She was a member of the National Honor Society, Art, Math, and Spanish clubs.

She is a freshman at BGSU Firelands.

She is the daughter of Sheryl and Anthony Vartorella of Berlin Heights.

Sandusky resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Kali Elizabeth Hurlburt of Sandusky has received the Sandusky Knights of Columbus (Third and Fourth Degrees), Firelands Shrine Club and Singara Grotto Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. She will receive $432 towards tuition for the 2016-2017 academic year.

This scholarship is available to graduates or candidates for graduation from a high school in Erie County or Norwalk, St. Paul, Bellevue, or Monroeville high schools. These organizations funded the first scholarships ever awarded by BGSU Firelands and, in the spring of 2000, these organizations endowed the scholarship so that it will continue in perpetuity.

Hurlburt is a 2016 graduate of Perkins High School. She was a member of the Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, and Pep Band.

She is a freshman at BGSU Firelands.

She is the daughter of Mary Beth and Patrick Hurlburt of Sandusky.

Huron, Ohio – Donna Rae Kuhlman of Norwalk has received the Sandusky Knights of Columbus (Third and Fourth Degree), Firelands Shrine Club, and Singers Grotto Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. She will receive $432 towards tuition for the 2016-2017 academic year.

This scholarship is available to graduates or candidates for graduation from a high school in Erie County or Norwalk, St. Paul, Bellevue, or Monroeville high schools. These organizations funded the first scholarships ever awarded by BGSU Firelands and, in the spring of 2000, these organizations endowed the scholarship so that it will continue in perpetuity.

Kuhlman is a 2013 graduate of St. Paul High School, Norwalk. She was class vice president and the secretary of the National Honor Society. She was a member of the Prom Committee and Make a Difference Day.

She is a sophomore majoring in computer science at BGSU Firelands.

She is the daughter of Sue and Don Kuhlman of Norwalk.
