BGSU Firelands to Screen Rebuilding Hope; Host one of “The Lost Boys”

Huron, Ohio – On March 15, Bowling Green State University Firelands College will host filmmaker Jen Marlowe as she screens segments of her 2009 documentary film Rebuilding Hope. Marlowe will be joined by one of the subjects of the film “Lost Boy” Garang Mayuol.
As a young child, Mayuol and thousands of other boys fled their villages in South Sudan due to civil war. Eventually resettled in the US, they affectionately become known as “The Lost Boys.”
In 2007, Mayuol and two of his fellow “Lost Boys,” now in their twenties, embarked on a journey back to Sudan to discover whether their homes and families had survived, what the current situation was in South Sudan, and how they can help their community rebuild after devastating civil war.
Rebuilding Hope documents this journey and is a powerful record of the young men’s quest to rediscover and contribute to their homeland; it also sheds light on what the future holds for South Sudan in its precarious struggle for peace, development, and stability.
All proceeds from the film have supported the health care and education projects initiated by the three young men the film features.
Marlowe is a Seattle-based author/documentary filmmaker/playwright and human rights advocate who first discovered her passion for working with children through her career in youth theater.
In 2004, Marlowe traveled to Northern Darfur and Eastern Chad to make the award-winning documentary film Darfur Diaries: Message from Home and wrote the accompanying book Darfur Diaries: Stories of Survival. Darfur Diaries was included in the 2007 edition of the Best American Non-Required Reading.
Marlowe and Mayuol will be at BGSU Firelands on March 15 from1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. and from 5:30 p.m. – 7 p.m. in the Cedar Point Center Auditorium. The events are free and open to the public.
