Huron, Ohio – On March 17 and 18, Bowling Green State University Firelands College will be the host site for two activities presented by students in celebration and recognition of VDAY.

VDAY is a global movement of grassroots activists dedicated to generating broader attention and funds to stop violence against women and girls including rape, battery, incest, and sex slavery.  This global effort creates new opportunities and resources by supporting local activities, which in turn donate proceeds to local and broader organizations.

Presented and sponsored by The Women’s Resource Group, a student-run BGSU Firelands organization, local events will benefit Safe Harbor, a domestic violence shelter in Sandusky, and 10 percent of the proceeds will be donated to the women of Haiti.

“We are dealing with a topic that is very real both nationally and right here in our community,” said Traci Taylor, president of The Women’s Resource Group and a liberal studies major at BGSU Firelands.  “It is important to us to support awareness.”

On March 17, the group will screen Until the Violence Stops written by Eve Ensler, founder of the VDAY movement.  The documentary film follows events marking 2002 VDAY and features stars such as Jane Fonda, Salma Hayek, and Rosie Perez.  The event is free and open to the public and will be shown in the Cedar Point Center from 1 to 3 p.m.

On March 18, in the McBride Auditorium beginning at 7 p.m., The Women’s Resource Group, will feature a performance of A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant and a Prayer, a compilation of essays written by a variety of writers and edited by Eve Ensler.  The production is directed by Katherine Gauthier, a liberal studies major at BGSU Firelands.  Tickets are $5 at the door.

“We are excited to participate in VDAY activities again this year and hope we can contribute to the global effort to stop the victimization of women,” said The Women’s Resource Group Vice President Katia Castile.

The activities and events for VDAY at BGSU Firelands have been coordinated and organized by students.  For more details on these events, contact Sharon Britton at 419.372.0689.
