BGSU Firelands Students Present at Regional Conference

Huron, Ohio – Four Bowling Green State University Firelands students gave a presentation at the North Central Sociological Association Annual Conference in Cincinnati on Friday, April 11. Their program detailed the efforts of the BGSU Firelands student organization Humanity Organized for Peace through Education.
The HOPE club has been active on campus for the last several years and has been instrumental in helping to establish and reinforce the commitment BGSU Firelands and the student body have to the surrounding community.
Titled “Building HOPE: Creating a Sense of Community at Regional Branch Campuses,” the presentation at the conference focused on four supporting points: strong commitment, diversity, community service, and leadership.
Throughout the last year, members of the group have organized or supported multiple food drives, a diaper and baby wipe drive, a coat drive, a conference titled “Nuclear Labyrinth on the Great Lakes,” a program on the growing student debt crisis, an event to support the BGSU Firelands community garden, and much more.
“I have come to both respect and admire the tireless commitment this small group of students has had over the past year to link the College to the broader human community,” said club advisor and BGSU Firelands faculty member Tim Jurkovac.
Student presenters at the conference included past and present club officers Talon Smith, Huron; Jessica Oliver, Huron; Brittany Graves, Huron; and, Travis Skelly, Lorain.
