Republic resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Jessica Marie Enders of Republic has received the Dorothy Pickett Walker Memorial Scholarship for Elementary Education to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. Enders will receive $1,000 towards tuition for the 2013-2014 academic year.

This scholarship, established in 1999, is made possible by a gift from Walker’s daughter, Nancy Herl, in memory of her mother. The scholarship is available to a full- or part-time student who has a 3.0 GPA and plans to major in early childhood education. Financial need is also a consideration for this award.

Enders is a 2013 graduate of Seneca East High School.

She is a freshman majoring in early childhood education at BGSU Firelands.

She is the daughter of Casey and Patricia Enders of Republic.

Sandusky resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Carl F. Baum of Sandusky has received the Home Savings Business Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. Baum will receive $2,000 towards tuition for the 2013-2014 academic year.

This scholarship was established in 2006 by the Home Savings Charitable Foundation. Recipients of this award are chosen from students in the Norwalk and Sandusky area who have completed their first year of studies at BGSU Firelands. The recipient must be a business major who has at least a 3.0 GPA.

Baum is a 1998 graduate of Perkins High School.

He is a senior majoring in business at BGSU Firelands where he has been on the Dean’s List.

He is the son of Charles Baum.

Castalia resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Rian Rachelle Spicer of Castalia has received the Kiwanis Club of Sandusky Bay – Perkins Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. Spicer will receive $458 towards tuition for the 2013-2014 academic year.

This endowed award is available to full-time students who are graduates of Sandusky, St. Mary’s Central Catholic, Perkins, Huron, or Margaretta high schools.

Spicer is a 2012 graduate of Margaretta High School where she earned an academic letter and was involved in golf, diving, track, dance team, and band.

She is a sophomore majoring in speech pathology at BGSU Firelands where she has been on the Dean’s List and she was inducted into the Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society.

She is the daughter of Ryan and Karol Spicer of Castalia.

Castalia resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Michael S. Rankin of Castalia has received the Kiwanis Club of Sandusky Bay – Perkins Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. Rankin will receive $458 towards tuition for the 2013-2014 academic year.

This endowed award is available to full-time students who are graduates of Sandusky, St. Mary’s Central Catholic, Perkins, Huron, or Margaretta high schools.

Rankin is a 2012 graduate of Margaretta High School where he earned numerous awards and honors including English I Student of the Year, Math Student of the Year, the Archie Griffin Sportmanship Award, the Citizens Bank Award for Football, and the Citizen Bank Award for Track and Field. He was named SBC All American Track and Field and SBC All American Football. While in high school he was active with the State Concert Band, concert band, jazz band, Teen Leadership, football, track, power lifting, Grace Church Acolytes, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and YMCA Lifeguarding.

He is a sophomore majoring in accounting at BGSU Firelands.

He is the son of Steven and Wendy Rankin of Castalia.

Sandusky resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Matthew Joseph Ommert of Sandusky has received the Robert W. Traver Memorial Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. Ommert will receive $950 towards tuition for the 2013-2014 academic year.

Established in memory of the former Sandusky chief of police and chief of security for Mr. Wiggs Department Stores, Inc., this scholarship is awarded to a student who is a resident of Sandusky. Sons and daughters of police officers are given preference.

Ommert is a 2011 graduate of Perkins High School.

He is a junior majoring in early childhood education at BGSU Firelands where he was inducted into the National Society of Leadership and Success.

He is the son of James and Sarah Ommert of Sandusky.

Greenwich resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Elaysha Inez Taft of Greenwich has received the Sally Deforest Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. Taft will receive $667 towards tuition for the 2013-2014 academic year.

This scholarship was established by the Sally DeForest Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. This scholarship is available to graduates from all high schools in Huron and Lorain counties and Edison High School. It is available to part-time or full-time students.

Taft is a 2012 graduate of New London High School where she earned a varsity letter in track and field, a third-year academic letter, and an honors diploma. While in high school she was on the high honor roll and active with Family Career and Community Leaders of America, choir, track, and National Honor Society. She has volunteered at Twilight Nursing Center, Gaymont Nursing Center, a local horse farm, and the concession stand at high school football games.

She is a sophomore majoring in business at BGSU Firelands.

She is the daughter of Lisa Miller of Greenwich.

Huron, Ohio – Jena Marie Meggitt of Sandusky has received the Sidney Frohman Foundation Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. Meggitt will receive $1,000 towards tuition for the 2013-2014 academic year.

This scholarship is available to students who are graduates of Erie County high schools and who are enrolled full time.

Meggitt is a 2013 graduate of Sandusky High School where she had perfect attendance, was in the top ten of her class, and earned an Honors Diploma. She earned several awards and honors including  the Career Tech April Student of the Month, the Career Tech Student of the Year, Elks Student of the Month, Rotary Student of the Month, Defensive Player of the Year in soccer, Second Team all District in soccer, MVP in soccer, Honorable Mention in soccer, Defensive Player of the Year in softball, Honorable Mention all Greater Buckeye Conference in softball, Greater Buckeye Conference Champs in softball, Second Team all Greater Buckeye Conference in softball, and First Team all Northern Ohio League in softball. While in high school she was active in Student Council, National Technical Honors Society, National Honors Society, Pep Club, Acappella Choir, soccer, cheerleading, softball, and Skills USA.

She is a freshman majoring in nursing at BGSU Firelands.

She is the daughter of Laurie Yontz of Sandusky.

This scholarship is available to students who are graduates of Erie County high schools and who are enrolled full time.

Cowie is a 2012 graduate of Perkins High School where she was inducted into the National Honors Society and involved in Aim for Excellence and Pirates for Peer.

She is a sophomore working towards an associate of science at BGSU Firelands where she has been on the Dean’s List.

She is the daughter of Brian and Kim Cowie of Sandusky.

Huron, Ohio – Olivia Marie Gornek of Milan has received the Sidney Frohman Foundation Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. Gornek will receive $1,000 towards tuition for the 2013-2014 academic year.

This scholarship is available to students who are graduates of Erie County high schools and who are enrolled full time.

Gornek is a 2013 graduate of Edison High School where she was inducted into the National Honor Society and the French National Honor Society, earned an honors diploma, and was involved in Student Council, cheerleading, volleyball, track, soccer, French Club, Band Council, Interact Club, show choir, Speech and Debate, Big Brothers Big Sisters, stage band, pep band, marching band, and concert band. While in high school she earned several awards and honors including a varsity letter, an academic letter, Student of the Month, Music Student of the Quarter, David Bauer Scholar Athlete Award, and she achieved first place in the Sandusky Bay Conference for pole vaulting.

She is a freshman majoring in nursing at BGSU Firelands.

Graves is a 2012 graduate of Huron High School.

She is a sophomore majoring in early childhood education at BGSU Firelands where she has been on the Dean’s List while taking honors courses and remaining active in the Student Government and the Humanity Organized for Peace through Education Club.
