Green-Churchwell Named Distinguished Part-Time Teacher at BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Bowling Green State University Firelands College honored one of its best at the 44th Annual Recognition Program held Friday, April 19, in the Cedar Point Center. Brigitte Green-Churchwell of Sandusky, a part-time instructor and special needs assistant, was honored as the 2013 Distinguished Part-time Teacher.
The award is one of the highest honors the college can bestow as the recipients of the Distinguished Part-time Teacher Award are nominated by students and selected by a committee of their peers.
“Her adapt use of questioning and instruction given in the classroom clearly allows her to stand out as an effective teacher,” said one nominator. “Those who know from diverse sources that she truly makes a difference in the classroom observe Brigitte’s presence as an effective teacher – a master of teaching,” stated another nominator.
Green-Churchwell was originally hired as a special needs tutor in 2005 and began teaching on a part-time basis in 2006. Courses taught have included university transition and college level reading.
Her professional experience also includes teaching at Western Reserve Elementary School and Sandusky City Schools as well as ten years working with the Erie County Common Pleas Court in a variety of roles.
Green-Churchwell earned two master’s degrees (special education and curriculum and instruction), a bachelor’s degree in education, and an associate degree of arts, all from BGSU. She is also currently working toward a doctorate in leadership studies from BGSU.
In addition to the many BGSU committees she serves on, Green-Churchwell is also very active in the community. She has recently been named a member of the Sandusky City Schools Board of Education, is the Sandusky City Schools past levy co-chair, and serves on the Sandusky City Schools Parent Congress. She also serves as the Ebenezer Baptist Church College Readiness subcommittee chair. In addition, Green-Churchwell volunteers for the Sandusky Band Parent Organization, Cinderella’s Closet, United Way, Sandusky High School’s United Black Students, and Perkins High School’s Confederation for the Betterment of Black Students.
A sampling of past achievements and honors that she has received include the BGSU Firelands Distinguished Teacher nominee (2012), United Way’s Key Club member (2011-2012), Women’s Resource Feminist Falcon Award (2011), BGSU’s Freddie and Frieda Society (2008-2011), BGSU Administrative Staff Council Spirit of BG award (2005),Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers (2005), BGSU Firelands Society of the Flame (2004 inductee). In 2004, her work, as an elementary educator, was featured in an online publication Education World.
Criteria for the Distinguished Part-Time Teacher award includes scholarly knowledge of the subject matter, careful organization and preparation for courses, an ability to generate enthusiasm for the field and for learning, demonstrated ability to stimulate the intellect of students so as to foster skills in critical thinking and independent analysis, ability to communicate the subject matter in a clear, effective manner, utilization of a diversity of teaching methods/techniques and sensitivity and responsiveness to students, both in and out of the class context.
In addition, candidates must have teaching experience at BGSU Firelands for at least six semesters including, but not limited to the semester of nomination and must not have received the award within the past five years. Candidates do not have to be currently teaching if other criteria are met.
