Huron, Ohio – Norwalk High School won first place honors in the Twenty-eighth Annual Academic Tournament held at Bowling Green State University Firelands College on Saturday, Nov. 17.  The academic quiz teams from Port Clinton and Edison high schools captured second and third places.

The Academic Tournament is an academic contest sponsored by BGSU Firelands.  Eleven teams from area high schools participated in the six round tournament.

The competition questions covered a wide range of subject matter, and required the students to draw upon problem-solving skills, in addition to having a good working knowledge of each of the ten academic disciplines from which questions were developed.

The adviser for the Norwalk academic team is Chris Cloud.  Team members include Katie Cooperrider, Cody Fannin, Adrian Go, McKenzie Hall, Ben Hohman, Luke Landis, Jared Lee, Kira Sizemore, Zane Smith, and Jennifer Young.

According to Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs Dr. Andrew Kurtz, “The performance of these students clearly indicated that a good deal of learning is going on in area schools.  The students should be very proud of their performance.”

The winning teams each received plaques and, in recognition of their first place finish, a $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a 2013 graduate of Norwalk High School who will attend BGSU Firelands next fall.

Other teams that participated were Huron, Margaretta, Monroeville, Perkins, St. Mary’s Central Catholic, St. Paul, South Central, and Western Reserve high schools.
