Local residents receive scholarships to attend BGSU Firelands

Sandusky resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands
Huron, Ohio – Andrea Ann Warren of Sandusky has received the Erie-Ottawa Mental Health Education Fund Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. Warren will receive $1,710 towards tuition for the 2012-2013 academic year.
This endowed award was presented to BGSU Firelands to ensure funding into perpetuity for students pursuing mental health professions, and in memory of all those who served on the Board, as staff members, or those who used the services of the Erie-Ottawa Mental Health Center. Students from Erie and Ottawa counties who are attending at least part time and planning to pursue a degree in mental health are eligible for this award. Juniors and seniors are given primary consideration and financial need is considered as well.
Warren is a 1990 graduate of Sandusky High School.
She is a senior majoring in social work at BGSU Firelands where she has been on the Dean’s List.
She is the daughter of Ken Warren and Gloria Veliz-Warren.

Huron resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands
Huron, Ohio – Kellen Alexandra Spies of Huron has received the Laura C. Keller Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. Spies will receive $813 towards tuition for the 2012-2013 academic year.
Laura Keller received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Bowling Green State University in education. During her teaching career, she taught pre-school, kindergarten, grades 1 through 8 and served as an assistant college administrator. She currently is involved in organizations centered on improving education both domestically and internationally. She continues to be active in the President’s Club and the President’s Club Advisory Committee. This scholarship was established to promote quality education and to increase the significant influence of teachers in today’s society. This scholarship is available to a continuing student. The recipient must possess a 3.3 GPA , be pursuing a major in the college of education and human development, and demonstrate leadership skills as exhibited by past or current extracurricular, civic, or work involvement.
Spies is a 2008 graduate of Huron High School where she was on the honor roll every semester. She was involved in National Honor Society, Model United Nations, choir, Troubadours, bell choir, Spring Art’s Festival, peer tutoring, and junior varisty volleyball. She earned the President’s Award for Academic Excellence and she received the superior rating Solo and Ensemble compitions.
She is a senior majoring in early childhood education at BGSU Firelands where she has been on the Dean’s List and a member of the Firelands Chapter of the Ohio Student Education Association.
She is the daughter of Daniel Spies and Ann Steinemann.

Milan resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands
Huron, Ohio – Julie Nicole Mesenburg of Milan has received the Richard P. “Dick” Smith Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. Mesenburg will receive $1,000 towards tuition for the 2012-2013 academic year.
This award is funded through an endowment by Dick and Connie Smith in recognition of the special challenges adult learners overcome while pursuing their higher education goals. The scholarship is available to nontraditional students who have completed their first year of study at BGSU Firelands. Financial need is a factor.
Mesenburg is a 1995 graduate of Edison High School.
She is senior majoring in liberal studies at BGSU Firelands where she has been on the Dean’s List and received the Rudinger Foundation Creative Writing Award.

Huron, Ohio – Megan M. Green of Bellevue has received the William Randolph Hearst Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. Green will receive $2,353 towards tuition for the 2012-2013 academic year.

He is a junior majoring in criminal justice at BGSU Firelands where he has been on the Dean’s List five times, earned an associate of applied science in criminal justice with honors, and is a member of the Criminal Justice Club. He has volunteered for Theresa Flores’ S.O.A.P. community outreach program to raise awareness of human trafficking by delivering more than 2,000 specially-labeled bars of soap to local area hotels and motels. He has organized and participated in two bake sales to raise money to fight human trafficking. He has participated in WLEC’s Coats for Kids charity drive to garner donations from the community for winter coats, jackets, hats, gloves, and boots for needy children.
