Huron resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Terri L. Horvatich of Huron has received the Alta M. Croll Memorial Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. Horvatich will receive $1,625 towards tuition for the 2012-2013 academic year.

This endowed scholarship is available to full- and part-time students, with preference given to women who are resuming their education.

Horvatich is a 1981 graduate of Norwalk High School.

She is a sophomore majoring in criminal justice and environmenal science at BGSU Firelands where she has been on the Dean’s List and maintained a 4.0 GPA. She was inducted into the National Society of Leadership and Success and Sigma Alphi Pi.

She is the daughter of Howard and Faye Shields.

Amherst resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Lauren J. Knowles of Amherst has received the Alta M. Croll Memorial Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. Knowles will receive $1,625 towards tuition for the 2012-2013 academic year.

Knowles is a 2006 graduate of Elyria Catholic High School.

She is a sophomore majoring in respiratory therapy at BGSU Firelands where she has been on the Dean’s List.

Collins resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Carmen Lyndsey Heitsche of Collins has received the Bowling Green State University Firelands College Challenge Scholarship. Heitsche will receive $1,000 towards tuition for the 2012-2013 academic year.

This scholarship is sponsored by BGSU Firelands in recognition of the academic accomplishments of the high school teams that place first, second, and third in the Annual Firelands Challenge competition. One scholarship is awarded to a graduate of each of the three winning schools. Western Reserve High School finished in first place, Norwalk High School finished in second place, and New London High School finished in third place.

Heitsche is a 2012 graduate of Western Reserve High School where she earned an honors diploma, was on the honor roll, was inducted into the National Technical Honor Society, and was a member of Skills USA.

She is an entering freshman majoring in nursing at BGSU Firelands.

She is the daughter of Joseph and Heidi Heitsche of Collins.

Greenwich resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Elaysha Inez Taft of Greenwich has received the Bowling Green State University Firelands College Challenge Scholarship. Taft will receive $1,000 towards tuition for the 2012-2013 academic year.

This scholarship is sponsored by BGSU Firelands in recognition of the academic accomplishments of the high school teams that place first, second, and third in the Annual Firelands Challenge competition. One scholarship is awarded to a graduate of each of the three winning schools. Western Reserve High School finished in first place, Norwalk High School finished in second place, and New London High School finished in third place.

Taft is a 2012 graduate of New London High School where she earned a varsity letter in track and field, a third-year academic letter, and an honors diploma. While in high school she was on the high honor roll and active with Family Career and Community Leaders of America, choir, track, and National Honor Society. She has volunteered at Twilight Nursing Center, Gaymont Nursing Center, a local horse farm, and the concession stand at high school football games.

She is an entering freshman at BGSU Firelands.

 Castalia resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Michael S. Rankin of Castalia has received the Buckeye Cable System Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. Rankin will receive $1,652 towards tuition for the 2012-2013 academic year.

This endowed scholarship is available to full- and part-time students who reside in Erie County.

Rankin is a 2012 graduate of Margaretta High School where he earned numerous awards and honors including English I Student of the Year, Math Student of the Year, the Archie Griffin Sportmanship Award, the Citizens Bank Award for Football, and the Citizen Bank Award for Track and Field. He was named SBC All American Track and Field and SBC All American Football. While in high school he was active with the State Concert Band, concert band, jazz band, Teen Leadership, football, track, power lifting, Grace Church Acolyte, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and YMCA Lifeguarding.

He is the son of Steven and Wendy Rankin of Castalia.

Perrysburg resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Blythe Echo Caldwell of Perrysburg has received the Dean’s Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. Caldwell will receive $3,000 towards tuition for the 2012-2013 academic year.

This endowed award was made possible by a $25,000 BGSU Alumni Challenge Grant matched with a $25,000 donation from the Frost-Parker Foundation. The recipient is selected from applicants who have attended BGSU Firelands and plan to pursue their bachelor’s degrees at the main campus.

Caldwell is a 2004 graduate of Clearfork High School.

She is a senior working towards a bachelor of applied health with a specialization in microbiology at BGSU. While at BGSU Firelands she has been on the Dean’s List.

She is the daughter of Robert Caldwell and Clara Bayer.

Each year the Firelands Positive People organization hosts a Positive Living award breakfast. During that award program, BGSU Firelands awards at least one student who is planning to attend BGSU Firelands a scholarship in recognition of the adversity the recipient has overcome.

Smith is a 2012 graduate of Bellevue High School where she earned an Academic Athletics Award and a letter in cross country. She was also active in track and field, a volunteer at The Willows at Bellevue Nursing Home, and was a teacher’s aide.

She is an entering freshman at BGSU Firelands.

She is the daughter of Tony and Erin Schmitz of Bellevue.

Burrow is a 2012 graduate of Monroeville High School where she was on the honor roll and the high honor roll, earned an honors diploma, and was inducted into the National Honor Society. She earned several awards including the Social Studies Student of the Quarter, the College American History Student of the Year, the President’s Award, an Award of Merit, the 110% Award, the Coach’s Award, and the Spirit Award. While in high school she was active in cheerleading, Student Assistance Team, Teen Leadership Corps and she served as the school blood drive coordinator.

She is an entering freshman majoring in nursing at BGSU Firelands.

She is the daughter of John and Susan Burrow of Norwalk.

Huron resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Brittany N. Graves of Huron has received the Huron Rotary Club Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. Graves will receive $750 towards tuition for the 2012-2013 academic year.

Applicants must be graduates, or candidates for graduation from Huron High School, St. Mary’s Central Catholic, or EHOVE and they must reside in the Huron City School District. The recipient must have community service hours.

Graves is a 2012 graduate of Huron High School where she earned a diploma of distinction and the Marine Semper Fidelis Award. She was active in band, tennis, cross country, Relay for Life, pep band, solo and ensemble competitions, Girl Scouts, the Friends of Rachel Club, Rachel’s Challenge, peer mentoring, tutoring, Art Club, Students Against Destructive Decisions, the Character Accountability Respect Dedication Safety Club, and the Vacationland Band.

She is an entering freshman majoring in middle childhood education at BGSU Firelands.

She is the daughter of Mark and Mary Graves of Huron.

Norwalk resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Daniell Marie Welfle of Norwalk has received the Sally DeForest Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. Welfle will receive $613 towards tuition for the 2012-2013 academic year.

This scholarship was established by the Sally DeForest Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. This scholarship is available to graduates from all high schools in Huron and Lorain counties and Edison High School. It is available to part-time or full-time students.

Welfle is a 2003 graduate of Norwalk High School.

She is a junior majoring in diagnostic medical sonography at BGSU Firelands where she has been on the Dean’s List.

She is the daughter of William Welfle and Elaine Schaffer.
