Robust Attendance for BGSU Firelands Courses at Sandusky High

Sandusky, Ohio – One week into classes and the Bowling Green State University Firelands College fledgling program at Sandusky High School is off to a promising start. With a total of 135 seats being filled in 11 classes, administrations at both of the institutions are pleased.
“Anytime you start a new initiative, you are hopeful about the level of success,” said BGSU Firelands Dean William Balzer. “These results clearly support the need and demonstrate benefit to the community of offering classes in Sandusky.”
Available in the evening and open to anyone with a high school diploma, the courses include a variety of general education classes. The classes are an affordable and convenient option for those who cannot travel to the BGSU Firelands Huron campus or elsewhere.
“The high school is a center for learning and that should extend well beyond earning a diploma,” said Sandusky High School Superintendent Tom Tucker. “The BGSU Firelands presence is an important piece of the educational puzzle and certainly compliments the traditional secondary education and adult education programs we currently offer.”
The new BGSU program at Sandusky High School signifies a return to the past. Prior to the opening of the Huron campus in 1968, Bowling Green State University offered classes at the high school in what was then called the BGSU Academic Center.
Classes at the BGSU Firelands campus and the courses at Sandusky High School began on August 22. Class sizes in the Sandusky High School courses currently range from 6 to 24 students.
“Initially we offered a wide variety of classes and we wanted to see how the community would respond. The enrollment this semester will help us build schedules for future terms,” said Balzer. He added that the college is working with contractors and the school district to have permanent BGSU Firelands outdoor signage installed at the high school.

Intermediate Algebra
Introduction to Academic Writing
Introduction to American Studies
Introduction to Business Technology
Introduction to Criminal Justice
Introduction to Human Nutrition
Introduction to Statistics
Principles of Sociology
Writing about Literature
The program at Sandusky High School was modeled after a successful program at Norwalk High School which has been active since 2008. During this fall semester, Norwalk High School has 73 seats filled in eight separate courses.
