Huron, Ohio – On March 2, BGSU Firelands will host author and poet Lynn Powell as she presents a discussion on her new book Framing Innocence; A Mother’s Photographs, A Prosecutor’s Zeal, and a Small Town’s Response.

Framing Innocence is the true account of Oberlin, Ohio, resident Cynthia Stewart and her legal and emotional battle to clear her name after she was wrongly accused in 2000 of child pornography due to photographs she had taken of her 8-year-old daughter.

The riveting and beautifully told story presents the perfect storm of events and people that threatened an ordinary family in a small American town. Framing Innocence features a determined prosecutor; a fundamentalist Christian anti-porn crusader who is appointed the daughters guardian; the local attorneys for whom the case would become a crucible; and the many neighbors—friends and strangers, Republican and Democrat—who come together to fight for sanity and for justice for the Stewart family.

“Powell tells the story clearly, carefully documenting facts and legal issues as well as conveying vivid personal scenes between the key figures,” said Larry Smith, who reviewed the book for the New York Journal of Book Review and helped to organize the event at Firelands.  “It is an unsettling story bound to grip readers with its own quest for justice, understanding, and truth.”

Powell is also the author of two books of poetry, Old & New Testaments and The Zones of Paradise, and has been awarded fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Ohio Arts Council.  She currently lives with her family in Oberlin.

Sponsored by the BGSU Firelands Humanities Department, The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Erie County, and the BGSU Firelands Writers Group, the event is free and open to the public and will be offered at both noon and 7 p.m. in the Cedar Point Center at BGSU Firelands, One University Drive, Huron, Ohio.
