Video Art Quiz

1) Answer the Blog Entry Quiz: (posted before start of class March 26) Project 2-1

2) Please create a new post on your blog, called Video Art Quiz. Copy and paste the following questions into the post, and respond accordingly. Use the link at the bottom to find more information on the artworks.

3) Name an Early artist mentioned in the article for CONCEPTUAL WORK performing in front of the camera. Describe a work. (2 points)

Ana Mendieta – In Burial Pyramid(1974) Mendieta is underneath a mound of rocks, however you can’t see her at first. She begins to shake violently until all of the rocks have fallen off of her revealing her nude underneath.

4) Name an artist mentioned who deals with PERSONAL NARRATIVE. Describe a work. (2 points)

Bill Viola – A Non-Dairy Creamer(1975) Viola “reflection” can be seen in a cup of coffee. As his reflection drinks the coffee, the cup slowly drains without actually moving.

5) Describe the piece you were most interested in viewing after reading this article. Look the work up on the links, and expand on Rush’s comments. (2 points)

I was fairly interested in viewing Chris Burden’s Shoot(1971). The article said that he actually shot himself in the arm with a gun. When i found it on YouTube I was a bit disapointed. It was only an 8 second long clip of the gun appearing to have been fired, him flinching, and walking towards his friend.

6) What do you better understand now about Video Art? (2 points)

I better understand the history of video art, and how it evolved. Before, all I had seen was the Wonder Woman video mentioned in the article which was incredibly tedious.

7) Based on Rush and this article, what makes Video Art vs. an “artful video”? (2 points)

Assignment 3 Proposal

1. Since Iam kind of a dare devil at heart I think i want to possibly video tape me doing dare devilish stuff. I don’t really know how to put a story behind that but it may not necessarily need one. I may end up turning it into a comedy of sorts since I am a fan of making people laugh. For example I will build up the first jump into being epic, and then when i actually do it, it is just a tiny gap.

2. One of my friends will probably be video taping and he may make an appearance in the video also. It will probably take place in a number of places around campus, such as one of the gyms in the Epler building or in other spots around campus.

3. Basically I’m a little crazy at heart so I want the audience to understand that I can’t just sit around and do nothing, and that i have to do, as my girlfriend says, ‘stupid stuff’, just to see if I can do it.

4.There probably doesn’t need to be much sound other than a few pieces of dialog. I may add some music, although not very much obviously. I want to use some clever camera angles to make my stunts seem even more intense. I also think that I want to “increase” the intensity of the stunts each time. Jumping off of higher and higher things.
