Spring 2010 Library Electronic Resources Update

The Libraries’ databases are constantly being updated and upgraded to provide new content and improved ways of accessing that content. During fall semester, the Libraries purchased several new databases, added a number of free resources, and many of our vendors enhanced their products. Below are the highlights!

General updates Subject-specific updates

OhioLINK chooses ISI

ISI Web of Knowledge logo

learn more about Web of Knowledge

This fall, OhioLINK issued an Intent to Negotiate for an interdisciplinary citation index and examined proposals from both ISI (Thomson Reuters) and Scopus (Elsevier). We are happy to announce that OhioLINK accepted Thomson’s proposal. This means that not only will BGSU continue to have access to ISI’s Web of Science citation products (Science Citation Index Expanded, Social Sciences Citation Index, and Arts & Humanities Citation Index), but that this access has been extended (back to 1965) and other Thomson products have been added to our subscription, including Journal Citation Reports, BIOSIS Previews, and the Derwent Innovation Index.

EBSCO Mobile

EBSCO Mobile

In November, EBSCO released an interface specially designed for searching EBSCO databases from your smartphone. Almost all of our 57 EBSCO databases are available through EBSCO Mobile, including Academic Search Complete, Business Source Complete, America: History and Life, and RILM. Find it by clicking on “EBSCO Mobile” under “All Research Databases” on the Libraries’ home page, or using the “Mobile access” link in the full descriptions of individual databases.

New LexisNexis Interface

LexisNexis screen shot

This spring, LexisNexis will launch a new interface that will make searching for newspaper articles, company information, legal cases and biographies in LexisNexis Academic easier. Click on “Try the new LexisNexis now!” to see how it works (not available from off-campus).

Enhanced database descriptions

The full records of our databases have been updated and enhanced to include dates of coverage, short and full descriptions, links to tutorials or user guides, and more, helping your students choose the right resource and provide value-added information.

Five Ohio newspapers

America's Newspapers Screenshot

learn more about America’s Newspapers

While OhioLINK budget cuts caused cuts to some databases, OhioLINK did retain full-text access to five important Ohio newspapers through the database America’s Newspapers. The Toledo Blade, Columbus Dispatch, Dayton Daily News, and Cleveland Plain Dealer can be searched here from the 1990s to the present, and the Cincinnati Post from 1990 to 2007.

Historical index to the BG News

BG News Index

search the BG News Index

The BG News Index now searches citations to articles from the BG News back to 1920. The paper itself can be viewed in the Libraries’ Center for Archival Collections (5th floor, Jerome Library).

RefWorks updates

RefWorks logo

access RefWorks

This fall we added a few new custom import and export filters to RefWorks, including the newest editions of MLA (7th) and APA (6th) styles. We customized our landing page to display links to our new RefWorks guide and importing/exporting directions. We also implemented a way for current BGSU students, faculty and staff to look up the RefWorks group code (required for off-campus access) in Blackboard. RefWorks is also now available to alumni. Look for an updated interface for RefWorks this spring.

Marquis Who’s Who now in LexisNexis

Many of the Who’s Who biographical publications are now full-text in LexisNexis. Use our record for Who’s Who to limit a LexisNexis search just to these publications

Access to Guides

Proposal
Make the three research guides links on our home page (screenshot) into one link that goes to one gateway page for course, subject, and format guides. To do this we need to do three things:

1. Name the link
Problem of naming: what do we call the link? suggestions have included:

  • Research guides by class & subject
  • Class web pages and research guides
  • Class web pages and subject guides
  • Library guides by class & subject
  • Guides by course & subject
  • LibGuides

2. Delete the Research Guides CMS page
We have found new homes for most of the information that is on this page (http://www.bgsu.edu/colleges/library/assistance/page39965.html)

  • Class web pages – will have list of current on new gateway page; link to older
  • How to use guides – migrating to Tutorials page, which will have a link on new gateway page under Formats
  • Library basics – also migrating to Tutorials page
  • Manuscript collections – list in their own box on the new gateway page
  • Topic – changing to subject listing like we have for the databases

That leaves the Formats page: http://www.bgsu.edu/colleges/library/assistance/page39828.html, which we have a plan for. This page is referred to below as 39828.

3. Make the new gateway page
Here is the mockup of the new gateway page: http://libguides.bgsu.edu/aecontent.php?pid=80040. Class pages from the current semester will feed in from the Course Guides LibGuide. Subject guides will collate beneath top-level headings listed, as in the databases-by-subject pages. Other guides are linked in the “Formats” box.

Each ACB has its own link for collection guides by format in this box:

Formats Page
We propose to break this page apart so its contents are either linked from the Formats box on the new gateway page or deleted. The below accounts for every link on 39828. Please look at the section for your area. If the link into your collection in the Formats box on the new gateway page does not provide adequate access to all of the links for your collection formats from 39828, is there a way you can make adjustments to accommodate those guides from somewhere on your site so we no longer need to maintain 39828?

BPCL
Most of the BPCL formats on 39828 are also linked here:
http://www.bgsu.edu/colleges/library/pcl/page38347.html
(referred to below as 38347). 38347 is now the page linked from the Formats box on the new gateway page. 38347 includes the following links from 39828:

Next steps:

  1. Please take a look at the link to formats guides for your area that is listed in section 3 above. Is it the page you would choose to get people to the guides to your collections by format? If not, please suggest an alternate link.
  2. Please take a look at the links from 39828 listed for your area. Are these pages or the information in them linked from your site in such a way that it is no longer necessary to use 39828 to get to that information? Let me know if that is not the case.
  3. Please look at the links from 39828 that I have suggested are no longer needed. Do you agree?

Please respond by 12/30 if you can. We can also arrange to meet in person (PIC, Instruction folks and ACB folks) if there are concerns about moving forward.

Thanks!

Amy
