Chapter 8

Posted by tjgeorg  Published in Uncategorized

Money makes the world go round!  So the saying goes in the US.  But does it really make the world go ’round in Second Life?  Well to a degree yes.  As I have made friends (yes I have one or two, more like acquaintances) they make money based on the land they own.  This is their main motivation for monetary gains in SL.  I think this brings up an important issue.  Is it worth, if you don’t make enough SL money to use some real US dollars?  This seems to me very odd, almost a waste.  I suppose if you invested time into something and it feels real to you then it would be alright.  The interesting thing with Lindens I find, is the multiple ways, and the ease of earning money.  This may be due to the fact that it is a sort free structured environment.  Overall I thought this chapter to be a good example of the ‘complex give-and-take between Liden Lab” (p. 236) and residents of second life.

Autoethnography

Posted by tjgeorg  Published in Uncategorized

Finally! After 8 time on secondlife i finally have some black hair.  I’m trying to create my character to look like me so I can attach myself to the character. Teleported to a body shape shop or an escort service, not sure though, it may have been both.  Anyways I had a few decent conversations with people one being an owner of a shop.  I asked her what she was doing in here and she said she wanted a new figure…go figure.  I told her I was working to form my avatars body shape and she told me i should just buy one…i’m thinkin that’s not a bad idea? So my next step is to get money for my avatar so I feel like I’m being represented in this virtual world accurately….what am I getting my self into?

SecondLife – Vampires, ah.

Posted by tjgeorg  Published in Uncategorized

So I guess it is true….vampires do exist.  Well, in secondlife that is.  As I was freebie clothes shopping I stumbled across an odd looking group of people, and by odd I mean people that weren’t wearing normal entry level attire.  I should note that I hate saying the words ‘odd’ and ‘normal’ because they are completely objective.* Anyways, a female walks over to be and starts to interact with my neck.  At first, I thought I was getting a kiss or something but then a notification popped asking if I wanted to receive bite marks! No joke! So anyways I thought about keeping them but I wasn’t sure if my purpose then would be to blood suck because I want my avatar to live the american dream or something like that (lol).   Unfortunately, I didn’t communicate with vampire because I was in a hurry to shop but I would have liked to pick his brain so to speak.  What posses one to have a vampire avatar? A big fan, romance angle, humor? I think it would be funny I suppose to have a vampire avatar…maybe I’ll inform you guys of that later.  Teddy out.

SecondLife

Posted by tjgeorg  Published in Uncategorized

I really haven’t been able to get on SecondLife because I have not had internet at my house.  It seems to be pretty fun from what I can tell but I am having difficulty editing my toon to reflect the appearance I want.  Internet at my house arrives today and I am greatly excited to do some more exploring.

Artifact

Posted by tjgeorg  Published in Uncategorized

What I got out of reading the articles is a couple of things.  One thing that I understood was the idea that there are things out there that aren’t usable to everyone.  These artifacts represent power or may have power over a society.  These artifacts typically tend to be unattainable to some others.  Take for example a Hummer H2.  Derived from the Hummer, which was meant designed for the US government as an all terrain kind of vehicle and then made into a modern SUV in the H2.

What does one think when they see someone with a hummer? What does it represent?  I believe a hummer inadverently communicates many things, ecspecially with gas prices the way they are now.  First off, a hummer is seen as a status symbol for people with wealth.  It retails for about 53,000 which is relatively expensive but it only gets 13 miles to the gallon making it a more expensive vehicle.  Its design intent is for offroading but one can see many famous people ecspecially rapppers and male athletes casually driving in them or in the car garages (just look at MTV cribs).  By buying a Hummer just to casually drive around seemingly communicates that they don’t care about gas prices.  If you’re not offroading why not use a van if you need alot of seating?  If one lives out in the country and needs a heavy duty vehichle to help on a farm is 53,000 an affordable price? I suppose it depends on the size of the farm but in most cases I doubt it.  Buy driving a hummer Class is much represented in a H2.
