Huron, Ohio – Bowling Green State University Firelands College honored one of its best at the 45th Annual Recognition Program held Friday, April 25, in the Cedar Point Center. Ginger Packert, Norwalk, a part-time instructor, was honored as the 2014 Distinguished Part-time Teacher.
The award is one of the highest honors the college can bestow as the recipients of the Distinguished Part-time Teacher Award are nominated by students and selected by a committee of their peers.
“She has all of the qualities that make good teachers great: Knowledge, kindness, insight, stern when necessary, and full of wisdom,” said one nominator.
Packert has taught part-time at BGSU Firelands since January of 2002. She teaches courses in modern American history, early America, and world civilizations.
Working at EHOVE Career Center as a social studies teacher since 1985, Packert retired in 2013. Previous to EHOVE, she taught at Holy Angels, Sandusky, and Sacred Heart School, Toledo. Packert served as the president of the EHOVE Education Association from 2003-2006 and 2008-2011, and has nearly 20 years of experience on the Association’s Executive Committee.
In 2008, Packert was named by Ohio High School Teacher of the Year by the Ohio Council for the Social Studies.
Packert has twice presented at the Ohio Department of Education’s Martha Holden Jennings Conference and she was a Senior Fellow with the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation in 1993. She also conducted a summer internship in constitutional study at American University, Washington, D.C.
She earned a bachelor’s of science in education from Bowling Green State University in 1982 and her master’s of arts in history from the University of Toledo in 1999. She also holds a Permanent Certification in Secondary Comprehensive Social Studies Education.
“Ginger’s class was exciting and it had an upbeat feeling. It was the class that inspired you to go because you wanted to and not because you knew it was your duty as a student to attend. I am a firm believer that ‘great learning’ begins with a great teacher,” said one of her former students.
Criteria for the Distinguished Part-Time Teacher award includes scholarly knowledge of the subject matter, careful organization and preparation for courses, an ability to generate enthusiasm for the field and for learning, demonstrated ability to stimulate the intellect of students so as to foster skills in critical thinking and independent analysis, ability to communicate the subject matter in a clear, effective manner, utilization of a diversity of teaching methods/techniques, and sensitivity and responsiveness to students, both in and out of the class context.
In addition, candidates must have teaching experience at BGSU Firelands for at least six semesters including, but not limited to the semester of nomination and must not have received the award within the past five years. Candidates do not have to be currently teaching if other criteria are met.
