Hamann, Bach and student HOPE Club Awarded at BGSU Firelands Ceremony

Huron, Ohio – Several awards were recently presented at the 45th annual Bowling Green State University Firelands College Recognition Program held Friday, April 25, in the Cedar Point Center.
Julie Hamann, Port Clinton, received the Dean’s Special Recognition Award; Theodore Bach, Lakewood, received the Distinguished Creative Scholar Award; and the student Humanity Organized for Peace through Education Club received the Links to Progress Award.
Dean’s Special Recognition Award
The Dean’s Special Recognition Award may be given annually to individual faculty members, administrators, classified staff, or members of collaborative teams who have made exceptionally meritorious contributions in support of the mission of BGSU Firelands. Awards may be used to recognize career achievements as well as recent accomplishments.
Hamann has worked at BGSU Firelands since 1989 when she started as a student worker in the computer lab. As she gained education and experience, she was promoted through the system and has been the director of Technology Support Services since 2000.
Hamann is being recognized for her commitment to the College and her constant willingness to assume additional responsibilities. Most recently, Hamann has accepted the added responsibilities of the Student Activities Coordinator while the position remained vacant for nearly one year.
“While maintaining a high level of effectiveness in Technology Support Services, Julie has organized many student fundraiser, events, and activities,” said BGSU Firelands Dean William Balzer. “She is a cornerstone of this institution and her value to BGSU Firelands and our students can never be understated.”
Hamann has also taught several courses and workshops at the College in a variety of areas including computer systems and software, digital photography, social media, telecommunication equipment applications, and computer programming.
Active in the College community and governance, Hamann has held positions as Student Government Advisor, secretary to the Budget Committee and the Capital Improvements Committee, and she is a member of the Info Tech Committee at BGSU Firelands and BGSU main campus.
Hamann received the BGSU Firelands Dean’s Special Recognition award in 2004 and the BGSU Firelands Windows to the Future award in 1993.
She earned an associate of arts in 1992 and a bachelors of liberal studies in 1993 both from BGSU.
Distinguished Creative Scholar Award
The Distinguished Creative Scholar Award may be given annually to any full-time BGSU Firelands faculty member (in his/her third year or beyond) for outstanding scholarly or creative accomplishments during the previous three years.
Bach has been employed at BGSU Firelands since 2011 and is currently an assistant professor of philosophy. Prior to joining the faculty at BGSU Firelands, he had teaching experience at Southern Connecticut State University, New Haven, Three Rivers College, Norwich, Conn., and the University of Connecticut, Storrs.
Bach is recognized for his extensive scholarly accomplishments as a first-time, tenure-track faculty members. According to BGSU Firelands Dean William Balzer, Bach has “far exceeded expectations for scholarship.”
In a three year period, Bach has had several published papers, presented at several invited and referred conferences, and earned a fellowship at the New College of Florida, Sarasota, Fla. His research has also gained international notoriety as he has presented in both Oslo, Norway, and Barcelona, Spain, and was published in the United Kingdom journal Connected Minds.
“He has amassed a significant and impressive body of work while upholding excellent standards of teaching in the classroom,” said Balzer. “Ted demonstrated the quality and caliber of faculty we have at BGSU Firelands and his work serves as an inspiration to his peers, students, and the scholarly community.”
Bach earned his doctoral degree and a master’s degree in philosophy from the University of Connecticut, and a bachelor’s degree from the New College of Florida.
Links to Progress Award
The Links to Progress Award is presented to the person or organization of the campus community that has been a significant link in the chain of growth of BGSU Firelands. This person or organization must have been instrumental in linking the College to the broader human community.
The Humanity Organized for Peace through Education Club at BGSU Firelands is a group of individuals who have been paramount in helping to establish and reinforce the commitment BGSU Firelands has to the surrounding community.
Throughout the last year, members of the group have organized or supported multiple food drives, a diaper and baby wipe drive, a coat drive, a conference titled “Nuclear Labyrinth on the Great Lakes, a program on the growing student debt crisis, an event to support the BGSU Firelands community garden, and much more. Members of the club also recently gave a presentation at the North Central Sociological Association Annual Conference in Cincinnati.
“I have come to both respect and admire the tireless commitment this small group of students has had over the past year to link the College to the broader human community,” said the nominator.
