New Tools in School

Not only has education changed in the sense of how we teach our students and how are students learn, there are new tools available inside and out of the classroom that helps facilitate learning. New Tech High has taken this to the next level. New Tech High uses in-depth project and problem based learning, which we have heard much on these concepts lately.

What I found really interesting in the reading is that the New Tech High model was developed as part of an overall education reform and to implement a 21st-centuary learning environment. This is very important as in this completive global economy it is important to have a significant percentage of students majoring in science, technology, engineering, or math. A study shows that from the first nine graduating from Napa New tech High, 4-% of the respondents either were majoring or were working in STEM (science, technology, engineering, or math) professions.

I also thought that some of the ideas that were explained in the book on how to use technology in content areas were pretty interesting. In math they explained an idea of recording rhymes and songs for whole math families, recording them on an i-pod or cd and then use them for studying.

With the expansion of technology and the changing in tides of education we are bound to see, and be a part of some really exciting times.

We are hearing more and more about 21st century skills, it’s exciting to read about how they can be implemented in any content area.

I remember when we did Junior Achievement in DJ’s class and we had that STEM poster to hang up in the Mrs. Sarkan’s classroom. I also remember when I visited the Technology Teacher at Bowling Green Middle School Mr. Black who stressed over and over the importance of these subjects. It was nice to see these show up in this book and your blog as well! They really are important.

Yes, STEM is big today and rightly so. We need to make sure we can incorporate business education in the T of STEM.

I do agree that STEM education and skills are excellent to focus on in order to develop key skill sets in our students. However, sometimes I also wonder if the focus on STEM skills is simply a repeated action of the focus on science and mathematics that occured during our nation’s race with the Soviet Union several decades ago. I wish there was a movement in schools to encourage students to use free technology sources around them (school, class, home computer) to develop a love of learning and the inititive to seek out anwsers for themselves. I frequently try to learn new skills and I read books, blogs, watch videos, and ask the advice of experts. I believe this ability to find and critique information should be emphasized within all STEM instructions.

One concept that I think would be interesting would be to integrate some of the science, math, or english practices into the business education classroom and making an assignment that could be done for both classes.
