The Importance of Sleep

Getting Sleep

For most people, getting a good amount of sleep at night is at the bottom of their priority list.   Since there are so many things to accomplish in one day, many people are trying to utilize as many hours as they can while they are awake.  Is this doing more harm or good? The answer is simple:  Sleep does amazing things for the body and mind and significantly increases good health.  For instance, getting 7 or more hours of sleep each night will help regulate appetite hormones and aid the body to keep a healthy weight.  It also boosts the immune system and helps the nervous system work properly.  Sleep does not only affect the body, but also the mind.  People who lack getting a significant amount of sleep are left drowsy and unable to concentrate.  Getting 7 or more hours of sleep will help consolidate everything you learn during the day and will increase the likelihood of remembering important facts.  Therefore, try to work on time management and pick a specific time to go to bed each night and to wake up every morning.  It is easy to create a sleep schedule that offers 7 or more hours of sleep each night.

Not getting enough sleep proves to be associated with many chronic diseases.  These include: cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, and depression.  Diabetes and obesity are related to getting less sleep because of an increase in hormones in the body that trigger hunger.  Therefore, if you’re feeling sleepy you are more likely to head to the refrigerator than back to bed.
