Inclass 6

Part 1:

I followed the tutorial as it stated and took the temperature bar to 2950 and the tint slider to + 2.  I made sure to take the white balance tool and select the grey area in the window to make sure the white  balance was correct.

Part 2:

For these two images, I followed the tutorial as it stated and changed the exposure range so it made the images much better in the end.  I also took the black slider tool for the second image and slid it till it gave it some deep shadows in the image.

Part 3:

I took this one and took the camera raw format to use the clarity slider and slide it to +75 as the tutorial stated.  Which in turn gave much sharper edges to the image.

Part 4:

I took this image into camera raw and drug the clarity slider as stated in the tutorial to -50 to soften up the image.

Part 5:

For this image, I took the fill light and lightened up the dark image and also took the black slider bar and put it to about 8 to make sure that it followed the directions as stated in the tutorial.

Part 6:

I changed the level curves on both of these photos as the tutorial stated in camera raw.  I followed the directions by sliding the slider till it was at the right area.

Part 7:

I used the crop tool at a 2 to 3 ratio to make a landscape photo, once in the right area I double clicked and let the raw format select the photo.

Part 8:

For this, I used the straighten bar in the raw format to line the horizon and let raw straighten out the image.

OWN

Before:

After:

I followed the tutorial for this one and found it helpful to use for the future.  By taking the image and adding a few layer styles and blurs you can make the image stand out much more than before.  For my own image part I just followed the tutorial that was given and the after product is what was created.

Part 2:

Before:

After:

OWN

Before:

After:

For this tutorial, I also followed the tutorial given for the first part and made sure to follow it.  By selecting the given images I could use the fill tool and delete that image from the picture but keeping the background.  I used this for my own image by taking the third kid out of the picture.  I used the pen tool to select him then took the fill tool and deleted him out of the picture.

Part 3:

Before:

After:

OWN

Before:

After:

I found this tutorial to be very confusing.  It was not clear about any of the hard items that it was trying to describe.  I did my best but the end result is not the best.  With my own image I used the same techniques that I learned in the tutorial and took a selection of the sky and made a gradient of it.  I then tried my best with the brush tool to make clouds.  The final part was to lighten up the image by using the curve tool.  I think in the end I made the grass pop out more.

Research Project 4

RESEARCH:

The song that I am choosing to do is that of Van Halen’s Panama.  It is a song about fast living and summertime which I think I can incorporate very easily into my project.  The way that I want to make the cd cover is by using images that incorporate summer time and speed.  Those are the two images that I see while listening to the song with my eyes closed and not necessarly paying attention to what the lyrics are telling me.  The tempo gives these images to me not the words.  For this reason, I want to put sports cars along with beach scenes and some water.  I think that when thinking of summer and speed, these are the images that come to everyone’s mind.  When I think of the summer I want to see sand, water, and a fun time.  That is why I am incorporating the beach, ocean and people playing v-ball into my cd cover inserts.  It will allow for me to have a big summer feel to the song.  The second part of the song covers speed.  For this instance I want to use fast cars going down the road to simulate speed.  Using exotic sports cars helps the user identify that the car is going to go fast because thats what most people associate with exotic cars.  If I were to allow the use of a simple car such as a cavalier or focus then the audience won’t get the message that I am trying to show them.

PICTURES:

The following pictures are ones that I have found or taken that I think will go perfectly with what I want the CD insert to show.  What works for me is bright beach scenes, top views of the beach and nice blue oceans.  Panama itself has nice clear waters so I want these same waters to be used in the inserts.  The beachs need to be brightly light along with the skies that will possibly be used to let the audience know of the summer feel that is needed for the theme I want them to take away with.  The second part of pictures that deal with cars needs to contain that of exotic cars.  As mentioned in the research above, it needs to have exotic cars so the audience can focus more on the speed aspect since that is what most people will associate with exotic cars instead of domestics or asian imports.  If I use a cavalier or focus its not going to work.  I need to stay away from these cars and instead switch them out with Ferrari’s and Porsches.  With these type of cars, they are not only appealing but also let the audience know of speed.

Sketchs/Thumbnails

These sketchs and thumbnails include everything that I want to incorporate into the image.  I think that the two half-size drawings depict a very quality scene of what I want the final to be as they should do.  The only thing that may need to be added as needed is some text over the images by taking the transparency down to about 75%.  I have seen this done in many other cd inserts that I believe it will work without having a problem with it.  If it contains a problem I will have to totally re-design the image panel which is the last thing I want to do but I don’t think its going to be that way as I have seen in the past that the transparency trick works.

Research project 3

Research:

For this project, I looked into all different sorts of magazine spreads ranging from ones with writing and small images to ones that had dominate images and little text.  Through searching the three subjects, I found that doing a magazine spread on food was what interested me the most.  I then researched everything I could on magazine spreads with food.  After doing extensive research on the subject I found that I will will be doing a desert spread with mostly pies and cakes.  From the imagery that I have and found on the internet, cakes and pies were the ones that provided the highest and most distinct quality of images.

Images:

Through all of the found images, I like how they all have a white background to them, it makes them easier to cut out and place into my spread.  I really like the one image with the white background fifth from the top.  This image would allow for me to make it a dominant image on the front page of the with text wrapping around it.  For one of my sketches I had a image that was meant for this purpose and I would like to include that in my final image.  A thing that I don’t like about some of the images though is some of them are too dark for the spread.  I think I want to have a warm appeal to this spread and by using some of these darker cake images it may turn away from the subject matter.

Sketchs:

Throughout doing the rough sketches, I found that I liked to have space for writing with medium sized images included throughout the spread.  I think that this gets the point across more than huge images with little writing.  I liked how some of the images I saw online had the first page with a image coming from the inside center to the middle.  I tried to incorporate this into my half sized sketches and hopefully it works out when I try to incorporate it into my final imagery.  I like to keep the title up at the top on the front page even though in my rough sketches I experimented with the placement of the title.  Throughout it though, I only found the top of the page to be the place to include the title. I didn’t like to include having bigger images on the second page then the first.  It seemed to me that this was taking away from the importance of the first page.

In class car

IN CLASS: BEFORE & AFTER

To make this image, first I took the original picture, made a duplicate of that picture then made it black and white.  I erased all of the image that did not need to be black and white so only the car remained.  After I did that I started selecting and importing different items into the scene from the original cop car picture.  I had to warp some of the images such as the sheriff badge and the wheels since they were not the same direction in the cop car picture.  I took the door and selected it, turning it white with a paint bucket so that it would match that of the cop car image.  I also used to clone stamp tool to knock out the dice in the altered image.

Project 2 research

Research

The movie I chose to do for this project was that of Stop-Loss.  It is a film about a man who just returned from Iraq and is discharging from the Army only to find that they are not letting him get out.  He goes AWOL and tries to survive life on the run from the military.  When doing my research for this film, I found that the most useful items for the post and dvd cover would be a American flag, A soldier, and possibly a tank or some kind of burnt background to symbolize a burnt past.  I believe that the centralized object in the poster and dvd cover should be the American Flag, after that some secondary objects can be either a soldier or a tank.  With the American Flag in the middle and a soldier at the bottom I believe that the audience looking at the poster will get the hint of what the movie is about without knowing too much to not want to see it.  It provides intrigue and wonder about what the movie itself is.

DVD

These images are my sketches and half size images of the DVD cover.  I made them look like the poster so they would relate to each other.  I like to incorporate the US flag in both the poster and the DVD cover, it is the relating image that puts both of them together.  I think the edge of the DVD cover will be burnt so it also relates with the poster in that way.  I plan on using STD Font for the text at a 60 pt- 100pt range depending on what one fits.

]

POSTER

Like the DVD, I have incorporated the flag as the main image and made the soldiers the secondary images for the poster.  I plan on using the STD font at the same pt range as the DVD cover and also plan on using a burnt background so that it also ties in with the DVD cover.  Incorporating these images will help the person looking at it relate to what the movie is about.  As the research above stated, I believe that these images will help the poster relate to the audience but not give away too much about the film.

Poster

These are the actual posters that have been used for the movie.  I could not find any dvd covers for the movie but I know that they are similar to the posters.  I like the way that they incorporated the flag and the people.  You can relate to what the film is about this way, I think though that I can modify these versions and make them better by tweaking them.

Soldiers

These are the images of soldiers that I would like to incorporate into the poster and DVD cover.  I think that most of them provide a quality and Hi-Res image that will go great with the poster.  I think the middle one will be the most likely one used because with it being a group of people helps relate to the film.  The film incorporates a group of people and not just one, by using one soldier I may have a mixed message about what the film is about to the audience.

Flag

I like the torn flag images.  I would go along with the feel of what I want the poster and DVD cover to be.  It shows a sign of hardship, something that went through a hard time but still holds it shape.  Its a hidden message  that I think the audience viewing these items will connect with.  I also would like to see how the soldier with the flag would look within the image.  If I can make it work, I think that would also be a useful item to incorporate into the two images.

Tank

This is the only image of a tank that I liked, If I chose to incorporate this into the design I feel that it would have to be in the center of the poster or DVD cover with the American flag in the back.  The tank is one of those pictures that everyone associates with the military.  It shows power and strength but with the image of a torn flag in the background could have the effect of something strong that has went through very hard times.  I will try the two items together to see how the they look.  If they go together in the final design, I believe that it will provide a powerful combined image.

In class 3

Part 1:

This was the hardest one of them all I think.  The hair was hard to get refined,  How I did it is I took the image of the man and I magic lasso’ed the outline of the man. After I had that completed I took the refine edge tool and made sure to to get rid of most of the unwanted material.  After that I took the erase tool inside the refine edge block and erased the background so that only the hair would show.

Part 2:

I the original image and made a copy of it.  Using this copied layer I made it black and white using the adjustment layer in photoshop.  After I had the two layers completed, I took the eraser tool and made sure to delete the black and white images that needed to be in color as the final photo indicated.

Part 3:

I took the five images given and instead of taking them into adobe bridge and photo-merging them that way, I just photo-merged them through photoshop giving me the same ending dialog box but saving time.  I cropped the images so it looked like a proper image and made sure that all of the images lined up in the end.

Childrens storyboard blog

THE GIVING TREE BLOG

RESEARCH

After doing some research on the giving tree by Shel Silverstein the them became apparent to me  This book is about our relationship between our parents and us and how they give and we receive.  The book involves three main items that I wanted to include into the poster that would represent the main them of the book.  These items are a tree, presents, and a child.  They all represent different items and would tell the person looking at the poster that its about the giving tree, and with these three items they would associate the poster easily with the book.  With the given items below, I think that I can easily put together these images and make for a great photo poster in the end.

This book is focused on the people around the age of 5-12 and I believe that by using more of a cartoonish look to it instead of a real look that it would allow for the poster to make a more meaningful message and image.  I like the fact that most of the images in the book itself are hand drawn, which also allows for the illustrated images used to be more effective.

PHOTOS

Trees:

I like all of the tree versions, but the best ones are the illustrated ones.  They all show a image quality that I would want in the final design and would help with the overall project.  I want to pick a bigger image though so that it doesn’t look pixelated in the end.  All of the images can be easily cut out and used for the final project,  I also think that all of them go with the color scheme of the rest of the images.  With the book in real life, the images are all hand drawn so by using the illustrated images that I have found it will be a better fit for the poster.

Presents:

Each of the present images are good.  I believe though, that I will choose the first one listed because it looks as though it is the best representation of a straight on present design which is what I want.  While there is ways to make the other one straightened, I think that by choosing the first one it will save me time and allow for me to work more on the rest of the project than worrying about straightening one of the images.

Child:

I like all of the photos that include the children.  I think though that to go with the rest of the choices of images that I should pick a cartoon or illustrated version of the children.  This will help it all look uniform as mentioned and prevent any kind of confusion with the image choices for the final design.

Clouds:

The clouds are the same way as the sun, it looks as though the best way for these clouds to be represented is by illustration.  The reason behind this is because with the real clouds it is hard to pick and cut them out of photoshop because of the un-uniformed behavior that the clouds represents.  I like the way they all look and it should go well with the design elements of the story poster.

SUN:

For the sun image, I think that the only way it would work is with a illustration type sun.  I want to make all of the images uniform so that they make sense in the final output and because of this reason, I think that going with illustrations is what the final output is going to be.

Thumbnails:

With the thumbnails, I like the idea that of using the trees as the biggest image is the best.  I think that in the book itself, the tree is the greatest thing mentioned so because of that, I think that it will be good to use that as the center image.  The surrounding images would be the other two main images along with supporting images.

Sketchs:

With this 8 1/2″ x 11″ sketch, I like the way that it has the tree as the tallest object because it allows for the person looking at the poster to know that it is in-fact the most important object.  It has all three images that I wanted to include into it and I believe that the overall flow of the design is very fluent and precise.  Both of these sketch’s contain a font collection of 60 pt stencil bold which will be used for the title of the poster.

With the 8 1/2″ X 11″ sketchs, I put all three of the images that were researched (Tree, presents, child) and made them into the final design.  I feel that by having the name “the giving tree” up top it helps the person looking at the poster know what book its about because of the obvious name.  I like the way that all of the items are aligned together, giving the tree the greatest height because it is the most important in the book so it should be the same way on the poster.

Assignment 1 Jan 18, 2011

PART 1

BEFORE:

AFTER:

With this image, I took the ruler tool and made a line across one of the boats bows so that it would know that this was a straight image.  Once I had completed that I hit the straighten button and it straightened the image.

PART 2

BEFORE:

AFTER:

BEFORE:

AFTER:

BEFORE:

AFTER:

With these images what I did was I used the prospective tool along with the crop tool to make sure that they were all straightened from what they originally were.  I took the crop tool and outlines the picture as it was at an angle then hit perspective which helped straighten out the images.

PART 3

BEFORE:

AFTER:

I took the two car images and took the magnetic along with just the regular lasso and outlined the cars as I seemed fit.  Once the objects were outlined I then copied and pasted them into the background for the desert which put the cars there.  With their original shapes I could make them fit into the desert scene as if they were sitting there for a car show or something to that same matter.

PART 4

BEFORE:

AFTER:

With this image I took the camera raw footage and mainly changed the black feature along with the saturation and highlights to make sure that the dog had a darker face but continuing to keep the detail like the pdf that the picture was meant to have.  After completing the image in raw I took it and used the lasso tool to outline the image and put it into a background that I seemed fit.
