Relating to Language and Identity

Bakthin’s quote about language existing in one’s mouth before they say it, means that language is already a bigger part of people.  People’s language is greatly influenced by culture especially  with other people that they associate with.  I would not have learned the english language with out my family talking constantly.  As for my language development, I have been greatly influenced by education, media, and friends and family.  Education has help through increasing my dictionary, helping me express my ideas through writing, and helping my reading comprehension.  Media greatly influences our language because it completely surrounds us.  I’ve been influenced by family and friends because I spend much of my time with them.

Narrative Reflection

A narrative to me could include a memory about a specifc event or experience in one’s life.  The narrative itself would be a story of what the person went through.  It could have as many details as the writing would like describing everything that occured during the experience.  I remember writing a narrative in highschool and I was assigned to write about an experience that caused me to learn something important.

What makes a good visual narrative?

To me, a good visual narrative is a narrative that can communicate ideas or send messages as well as a verbal or written literacy can do.  Although one could use a simple image to demonstrate an idea, I think that if one was trying to make a good visual narrative then they should be able to craft their visuals so that people will recieve the inteded purpose of the visual.  A bad visual narrative would be an image that is used out of context.  For example, if one was trying to talk about basketball but used images of animals, then their visual would be out of context and would not a very efficent visual narrative.

Literacy Post

When I enrolled in English 207, I expected to learn how to write more efficently and to write in different writing styles.  I expect to learn about different literacies like I have learned about today.  This is my first time using a blog and it is a very different experience for me becuase I haven’t done that much writing for classes via the web.

As for the term literacy, I understand it as the ability to read or write in a specific fashion.  There obviously aren’t to many different ways to read but there are many different writing styles that have different ways communicating ideas.

I think that learning about more types of literacies coincides with why we write in the first place.  We write becuase we want to  share ideas and information, and communicate with each other.
