Image Essay#1
Wednesday, January 21st, 2009This piece of composition was created by artist, Mel Bochner in 1997 and is titled Theorem of Pythagoras. It is shown at the Hecscher Museum of Art in Huntington, NY. I believe this piece is an above average representation of a dynamic composition. This composition juxtaposes rectilinear shapes, and utilizes the colors of red, black and white. The red rectilinear shape serves as a dominant element to the other two black rectilinear shapes in both color and slightly in size. The smallest black square is accentual in size and the black square at the top of the piece is subordinate in size. The negative space created by the rectilinear shapes that are juxtaposed, forms not only a geometric shape but also does so with orientation. To the left of the accentual square, i feel that that space is accentual negative space. However, I feel that the remainder of the negative space is primarily dominant negative space.
