This article focuses on how critics can have such different perceptions about a movie and how they interpret it. Specifically taking a look at director Judd Apatow and a few of his movies, including The 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up. Both of these movies contain good values on family living and relationships, but offer a highly crude sense of humor that needs to go along with it. Cultural transformation is brought up as a result of these types of movies; almost in a way to study and research, but the crudeness out-ways itself to much in these films. In my opinion both of these films do offer proper values. In The 40 Year Old Virgin the character of Andy holds out for that one special woman to lose his virginity to and be in love with as opposed to all of his slutty obnoxious friends who just want to bang chicks. While in Knocked UpBen and Allison decide to stay together and raise a baby that was unplanned even though their relationship is very non traditional they do it so the child can grow up in a normal family and be loved by both of their parents. I believe that values can still be taught and practiced in films even if it involves a bunch of guys smoking bongs or a bunch of macho guys telling crude sex stories. The overall theme is what is important, everything else is just for pure entertainment.
