Black Friday Chaos! 11-26-10

2010
11.28

Last week in one of my professors in my Telecommunications classes told us we should take pictures of Black Friday (hopefully for extra credit) if we went out into the madness. So thats what I did! I also did a short video of me inside Best Buy in Perrysburg, Ohio. It was a lot of fun (as it is every year.) I ended up picking up NBA 2K11 for Xbox 360 for $29 (regular price $59.99), Tekken 6 for Xbox 360 for $9.99 (regular price $29.99), American Gangster (DVD) for $3 (regular price $9.99) and The Dark Knight (DVD) for $5 (regular price $9.99). Got some great deals, but was mainly out there to take pictures and have fun. I can’t wait until next year! I’ll probably be out there again. But for now Enjoy the pictures and video, Thanks for looking!

iPads, MacBook Air, & More Ways for Apple to take your $$$

2010
11.23

Now, I love Apple products as much as the next person. But we all know that Apple comes out with new products or updates on their products so fast that we barely have time to let our older versions outdate. With the constant release of these great products, Apple has developed very die-hard fans that will burn more money on the newer products every time a new one is release. My question is Why does Apple continue to do this? Why is Apple allowed to do this?

Case #1 – iPad

iPads are VERY cool gadgets release by Apple last April. iPad was presented as the end all, be all that could replace people bringing laptops everywhere with them. In fact, all an iPad is is a gigantic iPod Touch. iPad can not replace laptops because they don’t have CD drives, they don’t have a lot of memory, they don’t do half of the things laptops can do. It is a VERY cool gadget, but nothing more than an gadget that is not needed like a laptop is.

List Price: $499

Case #2 – MacBook Air

The thing with MacBook Air is how they continue to make them more thin and more thin. Again, this is VERY cool, but you lose specs every time you make it smaller. It can hold less and less memory. Also, MacBook Air does not have a CD drive. Now, when is the last time you bought a computer without a disc drive? When Apple made the design for MacBook Air, he thinness of the MacBook air left no room for the disc drive. Also, there is only one USB drive. This is insane! Now a days, everything that plugs into a computer runs through USB. You can buy adapters that make one USB into four like a power strip. People can not have enough USB drives, but this computer only comes with one! To get a CD drive for the MacBook Air, you have to BUY an external disc drive. Not only is Apple making you spend MORE money, but the disc drive plugs into your ONE AND ONLY USB drive! Again, this is VERY cool, but regular MacBooks cost the same amount, have more memory, a disc drive and better overall functions. This is another cool gadget but not something that is not needed. Buy a regular MacBook.

List Price: $999

Case#3 – iPod Nano

I don’t even know where to begin on how much I HATE the frequent updates of iPod Nano. Personally I have been several people including my siblings buy iPod Nano and literally 6 months later almost there is an ad for a new one coming soon. Let’s do a short timeline. The iPod Nano was introduced in 2005 as the replacement for the iPod Mini. The latest one is the 6th generation touch screen iPod Nano.  A new iPod Nano has literally come out September every year since 2005. Some of the updates are needed such as more memory (to hold more songs.) Between the 1st and 2nd generations, there was little update besides new colors and slight memory update. Some argue the memory update was needed but if people want room for more songs then I say buy a bigger iPod. iPod Nano are useful because they are compact and hold a nice amount of songs for the price. If you want your entire library on it, buy a bigger one. The 3rd generation added the “Cover Flow” feature and video playback. Again, this is VERY cool and I realize the screen was increased but the screen still too small to seriously watch anything on it. The 4th generation switched the orientation of the screen and shape of the iPod and allowed the user to tilt the screen sideways to view video playback in widescreen. Again, this is VERY cool and  the screen was increased more but the screen still too small to seriously watch anything on it and significantly smaller than the iPod Classic screen. The 5th generation is the exact same as the 4th generation, but Apple felt the need to add a video camera. NOW….WHY IN THE WORLD DO YOU NEED A VIDEO CAMERA ON YOUR IPOD NANO??? The screen is STILL too small and the recording quality turned out to be very bad. Also, at its release, there were NO OTHER iPods that had this video recording feature. Why did Apple feel the need to add it to only to iPod Nano? Who Knows? Lastly, the 6th (current) generation, Apple decided to shrink the entire device. The current model is slightly bigger than an iPod Shuffle, thus making it the smallest iPod Shuffle yet. This is also the first iPod Nano with a touch screen. However, since the size has been decreased, this model DOES NOT have the video camera or support video playback at all. The only new thing that is significant enough to talk about is the built FM radio function, because there are plug-ins for other iPods but there is not an iPod (besides Touch) with a built in FM radio. Also, this model is being sold for the SAME PRICE as the 5th generation and has none of the video features. The situation of iPod Nano all messed up and is my most disappointing to talk about in this blog.

I realize this is simply business and Apple wants to continue to make the best products, but I felt the need to say something because this is getting redundant.

Sequels That Are Better Than The Originals?

2010
10.12

This blog is about sequels. I have heard many times over that there are NO sequels that are better than the original film they were spawned from, that sequels by definition are simply Inferior films. I beg to differ. There are several films I personally think are just as good as the original if not better. This happens often in the horror genre, but this post is about films sequels from all genres. OK! Without further ado lets get into the list! Keep in mind this list is just my opinion. Feel free to comment or post anything I may have forgotten! Enjoy.

Aliens

Halloween II

Friday The 13th Part 2

Scream 2

Saw II

X2: X-Men United

Spider-Man 2

Misson Impossible 2

Back To The Future Part II

*The Dark Knight* (Can be considered the sequel to the Batman Begins reboot of 2006.)

I will also say there are several film sequels that I have heard are better and just have not seen yet. For most of the following, I have seen the originals, but not the sequels.

The Godfather Part II, Superman II, Mad Max 2: Road Warrior, Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn, Star Trek 2: Wrath Of Kahn

KISS – The HOTTEST Show On Earth Tour 2010

2010
09.14

On Saturday September 11, 2010, I was lucky enough to go to Clarkston, MI and see KISS LIVE! There were early complications because apparently there are DTE Energy Music Theatres. The first one I mapquested was only 45 mins away from where I live, but the second one (the correct place I needed to be) was 2 hours away! My friend and I did not leave until 5pm and the doors opened at 6pm and we had a 2 hour drive ahead of us. However, everything worked out. We got there in exactly enough time to use the restroom, buy overpriced hot dogs & fries, and get souvenir t-shirts. KISS is actually the only artist I have ever seen LIVE that went on stage on time. Fans were told KISS would arrive at 8:50, they actually came out at 8:45, KUDOS to them for being on time. Finally, the concert started. The concert was everything I could have imagined and more. Everything you always hear about KISS LIVE is all true and then some. They proceeded to open the show with their signature opening “You wanted the best….You got the best…..The HOTTEST Band In The World!!! KISS!!!” Then, they played one of the singles from their newest album “Sonic Boom” entitled “Modern Day Delilah.” From here it was no turning back, the stage antics had begun. Paul Stanley’s zip line ride through the crowd, Gene Simmons blood spewing as well as flying onto the top of a the stage lights, Eric Singer’s levitating drum solos, Tommy Thayer’s ridiculous behind the back guitar solos, it was AMAZING. They performed all of my favorites including “Detroit Rock City” “100,000 Years” “Love Gun” & “I Love It Loud.” The latter two were actually performed back to back, which is great because those are my two favorites. The fact that it was September 11 also made it a significant day and the band proceeded to honor the day by doing the Pledge of Allegiance. The band also donates $1 from every ticket sold at the particular show. That night, they ended up donating $372,000, to the families of soldiers and military services. I also would like to throw in that they performed “Crazy Crazy Nights” for the first time since the late 80’s/early 90’s as a dedication after former drummer Eric Carr’s passing away in 1991. It was great to hear them perform the song again. My worse fear about paying around $70 for the tickets were the me not getting my moneys worth, but it was definitely well worth it and I would do it again! And again! And again! It was an overall great show and I HIGHLY recommend you going to see KISS the next time they’re in your hometown! I will be uploading links/some of my personal pictures from the concert. Enjoy and until next time….KEEP ROCKING!

Nu-Metal…Is It Back?…And Here To Stay?

2010
09.07

Been meaning to blog this for a while….Here we go. So…Nu-Metal music. Has it been resurrected? Is it here to stay this time? Did it ever leave? Lets analyze all of these things. First of all, WHAT is Nu-Metal music? Nu-Metal is a sub genre to heavy metal which is a sub genre to rock. Nu-Metal has the same basic themes of heavy metal with the crazy stage antics and heavier guitar riffs but has strong influences of grunge and hip hop as well. Nu-Metal had its prominence in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. Nu-Metal contrasts from heavy metal in several ways, there are rarely any guitar solos in Nu-Metal, guitarists often use downtuned 7-string guitars instead of the traditional 6-string guitar with a lot more distorted sounds, and bands sometimes use DJs as one of the members of the band, and sometimes (but not always) the vocalist raps the lyrics (because of the hip hop influence) while accompanying with singing or sometimes disregarding singing altogether for only rapping. I would like to also note that a lot of Nu-Metal bands come from California or have Californian influences as well. A lot of influences come from bands like Rage Against The Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Faith No More, but were not classified as Nu-Metal. California native band, Korn was the first band to be labeled “Nu-Metal” back in 1994 after the release of their self-titled debut album. Then, years later bands like Limp Bizkit, Disturbed, Evanescence, Linkin Park, System Of A Down, Slipknot, etc. became the prominent faces in Nu-Metal. However, after years of prominence on the radio and on TV, Nu-Metal began to fade. All of the prominent bands faded out with it changed their song just enough to stayed classified as metal, but not quite Nu-Metal. With that being said, the question is….Is Nu-Metal back? While Disturbed, Evanescence, and Slipknot have abandoned the frequent use of rap from their songs amongst other things to get away from Nu-Metal, Korn (the 1st labeled Nu-Metal band) has returned to the world of music with a brand new album entitled “Korn III: Remember Who You Are” that was produced by Ross Robinson, the same guy that produced their first 2 albums (the reason they got the Nu-Metal label.) The most popular of all Nu-Metal bands, Limp Bizkit has a new album that will be released very soon called “Gold Cobra.” There is also talks of System Of A Down reuniting after a 4 year hiatus in 2011 for a new album and world tour. If the 3 most prominent bands are back and in full effect will the other bands return to their Nu-Metal roots? So the final question is…Nu-Metal…Is It Back?…And Here To Stay? I will leave that for you all to decide. Enjoy the links I have provided below and KEEP ROCKIN!
