What I wish I had known: Look for an on-campus job right away

Hi! My name is Shawn. I am a senior here at BGSU. I came from a small town outside of Cleveland. This university has been great to me and in my three years on and around campus I have really learned a lot about BG.  These are just some of the things that I have learned:

  • Do not get over involved. There are more than 300 organizations on campus, but you do not need to be involved with all of them. Just pick a handful that you are really interested in.
  • The Tour Guide Office only hires once a year, usually right before winter break.
  • Be open to different types of music, you never know what you are actually going to like.
  • Look for an on-campus job Day One to have the best chance to find one. Sometimes they fill up quick.
  • EXPLORE!!! There are a ton of really cool things and places scattered across this campus.
  • Eat at the local diners. The food is just spectacular.  They are all little “ma and pa” shops, but they have some of the best food, especially pizza. Never buy from a chain, always go local with pizza in BG.
  • Always get a small blizzard at the Myles Dairy Queen. ALWAYS.
  • A job can be a great way to meet new people.
  • Travel whenever possible. There are a lot of really cool things around the corner; you just have to be bold enough to search for them.
  • Try a different dining hall whenever possible. You will be eating on this campus for the next couple of years. It really pays to find a variety of places that you like to eat.
  • Communication is the key in all relationships, be these romantic or between friends or even family.
  • Starbucks is on the meal plan.
  • Do not be afraid to try new things. I mean use your judgment, but also take risks. If you lock yourself up in your residence hall and never leave your room you will miss some really great opportunities.
  • Try both a Mac and a PC. You just might be surprised by which operating system you really like better.
  • An iPod and headphones can be your best friend when walking to class.
  • These next four years will be everything you make them out to be.  It really is all on your shoulders to make the most out of the opportunities. BGSU will provide you with some amazing chances, but it will always fall on you to take advantage of them.
