Seasonal Depression by Rebecca

Maybe you’ve heard of seasonal depression, maybe you haven’t. The “real” term for it is Seasonal Affective Disorder. Basically, it is when someone feels depressed (slightly or severely) during a certain season. I happen to have this from about December until around March. This year, it has been particularly difficult because I don’t have my mom here to make me feel better. Also, I haven’t made as many friends up here at BG as I have at home, so that is another factor.

Basically, my point in this post is to give some advice at combating that. BG winters are kind of hard because it’s so cold and windy. However, DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT lock yourself in your room and sit on Facebook all day. It doesn’t help anything.

If you don’t want to go outside (I don’t blame you if you don’t) invite some friends to your room to hang out and watch movies. Or go to the grocery store and buy something to cook and check out the kitchen key for your residence hall and cook together. There’s a movie theatre close by and bowling alleys. There’s even a skating rink close by. The bowling alley has a special for college students on Fridays. There are often coupons available, too (I add this information because I realize that many people, including me, are poor college students who can’t afford to pay for a lot).

The major point of this post is to not let yourself get isolated. If you isolate yourself from your friends in the winter, you’ll just feel worse. Make yourself go do things. It will make you feel better, I promise. Good luck with those winter blues.

Till next time,

Rebecca
