More Than a Face in the Crowd by Demetrius

It’s a little overwhelming when you enter college. I have been here at BGSU for about five weeks now, and it just dawned on me that in this such short amount of time, I have made a name for myself.

My main goal was to keep my “known” status I had in high school, and I think I have done a good job at it haha. It is so easy to get lost in the chaos here though. If you let the pressure get to you, it will without a doubt consume you and pull you from doing everything you possibly want to do. It is inevitable – you are going to feel the pressures of college life when first starting; I felt it, too!

The key is to monitor what makes your heart beat TEN TIMES FASTER, and what makes you get a little sweaty, when the heat is not to blame. Take all of that and ask yourself: “Do I really need to worry? It’s a large work load, but do I have time to do something else and still remain sane?”

If your answer is YES! then I would suggest doing something that will set you apart from every other face on campus. I followed this method and I have picked up a couple extra activities on the side. For example … I joined the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity, I am in a vocal jazz group and I am on Residence Hall Council.

BE MORE THAN A FACE IN A CROWD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

College is a time for you to find who you are – IN THE WAY YOU WANT. Don’t conform to what someone tells you is the right way, and don’t fall into traps people set to reel you into their organization because their numbers are low. You are an individual…and yeah it’s kinda cheesy, but…YOU ARE SPECIAL…everyone has something that they are good at or can do to help out. There are a TON of options here on campus that will fit anyone’s personality.

I guess where I am getting at with all of this is: Well, you are gonna do only what you think is right in college. Does peer pressure exist here in the “adult world”?…YES… but in some ways, it is so much easier to avoid because at the end of the day, YOU are the adult and YOU know what is good for you and what is not. SOOOO…take that for what it’s worth. More to come!

Love, Meech (:
