Geography 2300: Cultural Geography – Dr. Gordon
Week 1: Personal Blog Entry
Hello everyone! My name is Matt Warner, and I am a sophomore in the secondary education program: I hope to be able to teach high school history. Although I lived on campus at BGSU last year, I am now back home in New Philadelphia, Ohio, to take this class online. This will be my first online class, and I expect it to be an interesting experience. Aside from school, I am an active musician, and have been playing throughout the year around BG with the group “Lake Philadelphia”.
The thing that I suppose I am most interested in about culture is really the purpose of this course: how where you live effects who you are. I feel that this is often sort of left out of the usual cultural discussion. I have taken several culture classes at Bowling Green, and none of them really have seemed to cover this issue — at least not in any sort of detail. Most of the classes have said that the culture you live in effects how you are raised, and that where you live is certainly a part of that, but they seem to fail to address exactly how or why this happens, and how the actual land itself effects people. I feel like this may be especially important when pertaining to languages and dialects. I hope this course may answer some of my inquiries!
