For this assigment I choose to use a simple item that I’m sure we all use on a pretty normal basis, a cell phone. Although today it is MUCH easier for anyone and everyone to own a cell phone there are still some stipulations that make it a marginal item. For example. normally to obtain a cell phone you have to be of a certain age. Receiving a phone that your parents may have got for you is one thing, but actually havingĀ a phone in your own name, is different. Not everyone is old enough to do that. and Not everyone has family/friends that can get this item for them. In order to have a cell phone you must have money upfront to purchase a cell phone, to activate the phone, and then to pay a monthly bill. For some people a monthly bill, no matter the price is unattainable. For all the people who own a cell phone, they themselves can still be marginalized. There are MANY different types of phones and qualities of phones. Most people can own a cell phone, not everyone can own the top of the line phone. This marginalizes these people because in some ‘top line’ phones there are features that normal cell phones dont include. Some of these things may be preference, such as games, but others such as internet access or being able to take pictures depends on the phone you can afford to purchase. This is an item that many people will have an oppurtunity to own, but the extras , such as text messaging, internet, games, ringtones, etc are all things that you can only have if you have enough money, if you have a compatiable phone, etc.
