Reflective Introduction
About Me:
My name is Mia and I am a senior Interpersonal Communication major with a minor in Marketing. In addition to being a student at Bowling Green State University, I also work as a Residence Advisor in Kreischer Compton-Darrow, am a member of the Dance Marathon Faculty/Staff/Grad Core Committee, and am on the University Activities Organization’s Fine Arts Programming Team.
About My Portfolio:
This portfolio is a compilation of my works completed during my time in English 207. This course, which explored technology and literacy, allowed us to gain experience and reflect on a variety of literacies. There were an assortment of assignments, all with the goal of getting us to realize that “literacy” means much more than being able to read and write.
There were six major assignments throughout the semester which all aided — in some way — in our awareness and development of literacy. These were the Visual Narrative, Literacy Narrative, Public Service Announcement, Rhetorical Analysis, Cover Letter and Resume, and Re-seeing Literacy Assignments. Each of these assignments called for the recognition of a literacy which was then applied or described/performed.
Unit one included the Visual Narrative and Literacy Narrative assignments. The Visual Narrative asked us to illustrate the ways in which we acquired or use a literacy. For this assignment, I used PowerPoint to explain how I prefer using technology over performing traditional literacy acts. In the presentation, I described how I developed my technological literacy chronologically from when I first learned to use a computer to my current use of technology. The next assignment, the Literacy Narrative, asked us to recognize and write about a literacy that we know well. For this assignment, I chose to write about my Residence Advisor experience and how it counts as a literacy. In the paper, I described how I felt when I first became an Residence Advisor, how I learned how to perform the duties of the position, and how I feel now that I’m almost done.
Unit two explored technology and literacy and included the Public Service Announcement and the Rhetorical Analysis assignment. The Public Service Announcement is probably my favorite of the six assignments. This assignment called for the construction of a video that warned of a harm associated with the use of technology. My group — Jon, Kareema, Laura, Mindy, and I — decided to create a PSA that dealt with the issue of online predators and Internet chat rooms. We aimed our message at parents of children and teens and highlighted the statistic that within 30 minutes a child has an 100% chance of coming into contact with an online predator. In addition to being a topic that we all cared about, the PSA provided us with many laughs in the process of filming it and what I think is a wonderful finished product. Keeping with the theme of Public Service Announcements, we were asked to analyze a PSA for our Rhetorical Analysis assignment. This assignment asked us to try and determine what the original author’s purpose was in creating the work. I chose to analyze the “Father Involvement” PSA by the Ad Council. In my paper, I discussed how I thought the PSA used humor, love, and guilt to persuade fathers to play more active roles in their children’s lives and that this technique seemed like it could be effective.
Unit three explored professional literacies — more specifically resume and cover letter writing — included the Cover Letter & Resume and the Re-seeing Literacy assignments. The first of the last assignments asked us to create a cover letter and resume that is tailored to a specific position. I chose a position with Twitter, a young, rapidly growing micro-blogging site, that i would love to get post-graduation. The final assignment called for a re-seeing of a specific literacy from our resume. I chose to recreate my resume as a Twitter page in a series of “tweets.” My hope in doing this is that my resume stands out and that it displays my familiarity with Twitter. It was also a really fun project.
These projects have been more than assignments for me, they have been exercises in learning more about myself. Before this class, I had never created a PSA and now I can say that I have. Each of these assignments made me reach inside and pull out a detail about myself that existed but that I wasn’t necessarily aware of and as a result I feel like I know myself better. Literacy is about more than knowledge of a skill, this class has taught me that recognizing literacy is knowledge of yourself and I really do appreciate that.
