Fan, is there a connection between the American way and the graphs invented by William Playfair, Thomas Jefferson, and Joseph Priestly? For instance, how does Playfair’s graph on imports and exports of Scotland to 17 other places contribute to the main idea of the paper.

On your “Imports and Exports of Scotland” slide, you mentioned time series plot will be best to display the economic data but I think the paper stated he lacked the time series data. Any reason for making such a suggestion?

Last question on your “Until Proven Guilty: False Positives and the War on Terror” paper. I think you have a nice representation of this paper and my question is the first point you made on the final slide.
I was not quite sure what you meant by “all testing”. Do you imply the test given by Events A, B, and C?

    Hey Fan!
Great presentation! I think it is amazing that they were able to take data from that long ago and make it into graphs that are relatively easy to understand.
    1) In the lifespan graph, it is interesting to see that there is little variation in the lifespan from different centuries. It is a little hard to judge, so I feel like a scale would be very useful just so we could measure easier. Do you think there is a better way to show this type of data? Possibly like a bar chart that is arranged by lifespan (largest to smallest). I feel like that would add to the viewer’s experience of reading this graph. The difference between the dotted and solid lines is also an interesting idea, maybe a key would be helpful here to distinguish between the two meanings
    2) It is interesting that in the imports/exports graph that exports are so much higher than imports in Ireland. I would like to see what they were giving and what they were getting. I feel like a divided bar chart would be good to show this, as well as add an extra level to the graph. Do you think the lower values are necessary to include in the graph? The only reason I ask this is that they are very insignificant to the entire idea. I do agree that some sort of time indication would be nice, maybe by month? Also, to make the lines all solid would help in the visual aspect.
    3) I like the idea of that dart board to show an abstract idea. I had no idea that the probability of wiretapping a terrorist was so small. Can you think of any better idea of finding terrorist that doesn’t include wiretapping, because that obviously isn’t foolproof? The false positive chart was also interesting and proves that we can’t use this method because there is a low chance it is correct.
Great job and hope you have a great break!
    Sara
