To me there are many aspects to knowing a language. In order to truely know a language an individual must be able to communicate his or her ideas in a sucessful manner. Comminication may done in the form of writing, speaking, symbols, gestures, imagery, ect. If we truely examine language today I think we can arguementivley say that it was created to get what one wants. In primitive forms cavemen used it to pass along stories and information they wanted people to know. In more modern times we use language in the same way only we have devoloped more syphosticated methodologies of doing so. Without language the world we know today would not exist. For example, we would not be able to pass along knowledge, dating would most likely not exist and we would resort to more animalistic mating techniques, and our technologies we rejoice in would be rendered useless or not invented. Think about this, how would we learn to use a computer or drive a care if we had no means to effectively communicate what we want to know. How could the Manhatton project involving some of the brightest scientist in the world have happened? They could have not have communicated with one another to brainstorm the theories that lead to the invention of the atomic bomb. I want to reinterate on a earlier point that language is not only used in spoken form. I would like to bring some other objects to your attention that you may not thing about on a daily basis that are important to us. Instructions are a written form of language that make assembling or reaching a point of completion obtainable. Symbols such as a red hexagon signal us to stop when we are driving. Colors such as red, yellow, and green also hold a means of communication especially in our traffic lights. We often associate yellow with caution or yeilding. Symbols and icons are another important peice of language. Nearly, every person in America and even internationally can associate what resturant the golden arches symbol is associated with. Another example would be the “male” and “female” icon that helps people to easily identify the correct public restroom facility for themselves. I think one of the over looked forms of communication would be those of patterns. For example, brail which is bumps composed in certain orders helps people who are vision impared be able to learn and read by touch. This allows them to be able to read just the same as those who do have vision. Another example would be morse code. It is not spoken rather a code that is interprated by either tones or flashlight patterns. It was frequently used by the millitary and pilots. So as you can see language plays a very vital role in todays society. Without language, it is inconcievable the way the world would be today.
