I agree with Tannen’s argument. From an early age men are trained that they can get attention through speech. At a young age you will see boys assert their dominance through language. For example, boys will pick on someone who is less popular than him to make himself look cooler or more masculine. We also see them do the same thing with females. Boys will make fun of the girl he secretly has a crush on to hide his feelings so he does not appear vulnerable. I think this goes back to how parents tell boys to be. How many of us have heard our parents say, “big boys don’t cry”. Parents convince boys they should be tough. Therefore, they learn that they should maintain this status in groups. This is why they are trained at a young age to be dominant in language and in social situations. Boys feel an obligation to be masculine and live up to the social stereotype of their gender.
