Using the Wolfe Viewing Center Catalog

The Lillian Gish Theater is located on the Bowling Green State University Campus in Hanna Hall. BGSU Students, faculty, and staff may come and view our holdings in our state of the art facility on the 1st floor of Hanna Hall. Faculty may put items on reserve for specific classes. Please contact the film library staff for more information.

Basics about an entry in the Wolfe Viewing Center catalog:
·    The Main title will most often be the original title of the film.
·    The bold title in the entry will be either the English title of the film or an alternate title to the film. If neither of these exist, it is the same as the Main title.
·    Call number: Use this number to retrieve the film you’d like to view
·    By: A list of people and companies involved in the making of the specific film.
·    Format: The format the film is stored in.
·    Language: Main language of the film and if there are subtitles
·    Publisher: The company responsible for releasing the item. If there is more than one copy, there may be more than one listed.
·    Notes: Includes basics about the film and item including year of original release date, length of the film, any additional aspects of the item (including extra footage, commentaries, etc.) and how many/what type of awards the film won.
·    Summary: A basic recap of the item if available.
·    Chapters: Some entries have a “Chapters” line that lists the different films or entries contained on the item.
·    Also: This is where you can find links to other items within the catalog that deal directly with the entry you’re looking at. For example, here you will find links to sequels, other formats of the same film and other films on the same topic (i.e. all of the films dealing with Frankenstein are linked here).
·    OCLC#: This number will link you to the item in WorldCat.
·    Added: The date the film was cataloged.

Tips for Using the Wolfe Viewing Center Catalog:
·    There are multiple ways to use and enjoy the Wolfe Viewing Center catalog.
o     Browsing: The items in the Wolfe Viewing Center catalog are cataloged in the order they are received. Therefore, if you’d like to see what new items have been added to the Center, page through the Film Catalog.
o    Keyword Search: Located at the top of the webpage, the keyword search allows you to do a search through every blog entry in the catalog. This means many results can be pulled up, so make sure to use phrase searching with quotation marks and other search strategies to help narrow your results. If your search does not yield any results or you are unsure of an entire title or phrase, try just basic keyword searching (without the quotation marks).

§    Some Examples of Phrase Searches: “Audrey Hepburn”; “Mary Shelley”; “39 Steps”;
o    Tag browsing: Please see the “Utilizing Tags” section below.
o    Category browsing: Each entry in the catalog has been categorized based on genre. Click on the specific categories (located in the left menu) to browse through the entries in each genre.
o    RSS Feed: You can also have all updates made to the Wolfe Viewing Center catalog delivered to your blog-roll or into another RSS feed. Do this by clicking the orange button next to the search box at the top of the webpage (near the title of the blog). Follow the instructions for inserting the feed into your specific RSS reader.

·    Utilizing Tags
o    Much like the categories assigned to every entry in the Wolfe Viewing Center catalog, each entry is also assigned a variety of tags. These links (located at the bottom of every entry) further connect the entries in the catalog.
o    Nearly every entry has a tag for the director of the film. If you would like to look at other films by that director, click on the tag.
o    Many entries also have tags for keywords relating to the film. If you are searching for items with these similarities, click on the tag to see other entries that have been tagged in the same way.
o    Here’s a list of the non-director tags used by the Wolfe Viewing Center catalog:

o    In the left-hand column, there is also a tag cloud that can be used to browse the collection based on the amount of items with specific tags.
