Notes: Originally released in 1984? (112 mins.); Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of Moliere by Mikhail Bulgakov;
Summary: In this vivid picture of the demeaning nature of tyranny, Molier̀e, at the beginning an imposing, confident theatre director, playfully wooing his mistress, gradually disintegrates to a grovelling, broken-down sycophant, snivelling at the Sun King’s feet. This consummate artist plays the supplicating child, depending on the crown to continue his art. Based on events in the life of the renowned French playwright, the play shows Molière as a man beset by church and state because of his sharp-penned satire of both in “Tartuffe.” Both plays focus on the theme of hypocrisy–and both were initially banned from production in their originating countries.
