20 Jan

1. What concepts or new ideas does it introduce or rely upon?

This essay introduces the idea of sleeping with one eye open as well as the amount of influence nature and biological factors play on an animals sleeping habits.

2. What quotes (minimum of two) are important to you? Include page numbers.

“Sleep is such and overriding biological imperative that evolution has found ingenious was of enabling animals to do it in the face of formidable obstecals” (468).

“Dolphins are capable of what is known as unihemisperic sleep, in which one hemisphere of the brain submerges into deep sleep while the other hemisphereremains awake” (469).

3.Does it raise issues or topics that you are interested in exploring?

This topic seems very interesting to me, and I would love to find more instances where different animals are effected by biological factors and have different and unique sleeping patterns.

4.  How does this text resonate with other work we have read? Make connections between other essays in this chapter?

This essay goes hand in hand with the other essays on sleep because it shows the different patterns and outside influences on sleeping. It also shows again how we take it for granted and don’t see the importance of sleep.

Summary of “America’s Sleep-Deprived Teens”

20 Jan

This essay shows the importance sleep plays on a teens life, and what little importance teens put on sleep. Adolescence is the time for “developmental growth- academically, emotionally, and physically” (484).  Only 20% of adolescents get the recommended 8.5 to 9.25 hours of sleep per night (483,486). In addition to getting enough sleep, the quality of sleep us just as important. We can improve that by relaxing before bed and avoiding stimulants. Lastly, the  parents need to realize their role in their child’s sleep habits and set a good example.
