I picked smoking on campus. It is disgusting, but also a right of 18 year old’s. I think it should be limited to specific areas on campus. You can’t just ban it altogether, so limit it. Put the ash tray things you put the butts in around so they do not litter. Smoking is harmful to not only the smoker, but also the people walking by, second hand smoke. It is a law that you don’t smoke within 35 feet of a building. Students don’t follow this law. I think we need to enforce this law and make it more strict punishment. If we make an area that is comfortable and smoker friendly they will smoke there and not all over and abide by the law. we need to try to reduce the amount of teens that smoke. Get more information out about why it is unhealthy and unsafe. Maybe someday become a smoke-free campus. I want to write to the president or the people in charge of funding for green projects because I want to write to somebody who wants to hear what my thoughts and ideas are as well as somebody who can help me and help to start a project to better our campus. I don’t want to avoid the smokers, nor do I want to walk out of a building and be hit with a cloud of smoke. They have the right to smoke, but I also have the right to not be around it if I don’t wish to. Some people with certain diseases can’t be around smoke such as asthma or others. It is important because we are young adults trying to stay healthy and being around this smoke is not good for our health. I am also paying thousands of dollars to be on this campus as are all the other students, why not do our best to keep it beautiful so that we can all enjoy it instead of trashing it. I don’t want to walk around and all I see are butts littering the ground. We have a lot of animals, primarily squirrels and if they try to eat them or something they could choke or die. The animals are part of this campus as well, they are fun to watch and look at so why would we want to kill them? I think it would be a difficult process that would happen over time, but I think it would benefit everyone in the end. It would make our campus beautiful and enjoyable. Nobody should have to be around something harmful if they don’t wish to. We are here to further our education and realize our potential, not harm our future potential. It causes lots of diseases. Cancer, lung problems, asthma. It makes your teeth gross. Why ruin what we don’t have to. Have a program to help people stop smoking if it’s what they want. You can’t force them, but help them make the right decision and then help them follow through with the process. Make sure they know the dangers of smoking and the harmful effects of second hand smoke as well. Show how it effects our bodies and the bodies of others.
