Self Reflection Essay

Coming into this class I felt very well prepared.  All through high school I received A’s or B’s on all my papers I ever wrote and I was hoping that would continue into this GSW class.  After writing the first essay which was the literacy narrative I still felt very confident in myself.  This whole semester I received either B’s or C’s on my papers which was a little different then what I originally expected based on my grades from high school.  This class helped me learn that college papers are similar, but still really different from high school papers.  There are different expectations that I did not know about, but as we kept writing papers I learned.  My biggest improvement was probably figuring out my grammar errors I make through out my essays.  When I’m writing academic papers I always accidentally use “you”  which is a big NO.  I also learned this year how to better use sources in my papers.  In high school I would just find articles on the internet and use them in my papers; this year I tried using more academic journals and longer informative articles.  My high school teachers did a good job at teaching me how to speak to a certain audience through my papers, therefore this year I tried to be better at attracting my audience.  I tried new ways to start my papers either with quotes, a short narrative or setting the scene.  Being able to hook the audience into my papers made them a lot stronger and made me feel like a stronger writer.  I hope to continue learning new writing skills next semester in 1120 and I look forward to continuing to grow as a writer.
