Blog Assignment #3

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

1.       I think that we define a place but the place also defines us. I think that the place defines us without anyone realizing it then we define that place as how it defined us.

2.       Each artist was influenced by where they grew up and it showed in their art work. Sally Mann one artist grew up Missouri and as a child she was almost a tomboy she didn’t wear clothes all the time so she showed that in her art by having images of her children naked. She also did a lot of nature images because she lives in such a beautiful place she took advantage of that.

3.       I felt more connected with Sally Mann. I think it is because I really love photography and that’s what she did. She is also very into nature and takes many photographs of the outdoors that is primarily what I like to photograph.

4.       A place that scared me as a child would be my basement from my house in Indiana. I believed that it was haunted and I still believe that. A place that interested me would be the zoo I have always loved the zoo and seeing all the animals.

Playroom in the attic – adventure

   Great Grandmas house – warm

    Bedroom – safe

     Park – exhilarating

    Zoo- obsession

5.       Out of the places I listed I’m going to choose my great grandma’s house. It was not bright but it wasn’t dark either it was like a soft lighting. In the living room there was a couch that was always covered with a sheet. And there was a lounge chair and an ottoman. It always smelled like roses because my grandma had a beautiful rose garden and she would bring the some of the flowers in the house. When I was younger I went to my great grandmas every other weekend because my dad lived with her so it was like my other home. I had my own room with a little figurine or a girl and two cats holding an umbrella that played music. I would fall asleep listening to it every night. The figurine was very smooth but also very fragile and I remember that I broke the umbrella off one day. I was really upset when I broke it and I was afraid that I would get into trouble. I still have the figurine and I still listen to it every now and then.

Color Symbolism

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

Color symbolism is when different colors tend to have an effect on human emotions and behaviors. In our color lecture we talked about how Dr. Sues made blue a sad color, red a mad color, and yellow a happy color. The image I chose I think is a great example of color symbolism. The image is of a tree with a few crosses next to it, possible a grave site. The colors shown in the image are blues greens and some gray. In color symbolism many people relate blue to depression and sadness. This image is a very gloomy depressing image and having the blues helps create that gloomy tone. The blues create almost a fog look to the image making it more dark and depressing. The image as a whole seems as it had a really deep meaning behind it. I think that without the blues and grays the image wouldn’t have as deep of a meaning and it would create a completely different mood to the image.

Emphasis

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

Emphasis is a special forcefulness of expression that gives importance to something singled out. In art you can create an emphasis on something in many different ways. You can create it using color making the most important thing stand out. You can also create an emphasis by using dominance. The image I chose creates emphasis through color. The image is of a girl standing out in the open with frost all around her. The frost on the ground makes it seem as though the image is black and white but she is in a bright orange making her stand out of the image. The colors in the dress almost fade out at the bottom from the right to the left side of the dress. It starts out as the orange then slowly fades to beige almost blending in with the bland background of the image. I think that the color really helps create a emphasis on the girl.

Scale

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

Scale is a standard of measurement or judgment or a perceived measurement. In class we learned about having dominance and making our scale go from a tiny thing to a huge larger than life thing. The image I chose came from the internet. I chose this image because I think it shows scale very well. The person in the image seems very small compared to the giant door way. There is also what looks like a piece of cardboard that looks like it is the same size as the person. I think that scale was not only shown through the person standing in the large door way but also by having the view out the door clouds. Having the view of clouds out the door gives the idea that the house is either very tall or floating in the air somehow. I think this makes me think that the world is huge and the person is looking out onto the world. This image makes me think of being in a plane looking out the window down onto the tiny houses until they disappear into colors almost.

Triadic Color Scheme

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

Triadic color scheme is a color scheme that is made up of three colors that are equally distant from each other on the color wheel. This offers a strong visual contrast while at the same time shows balance. The image I chose came from the internet. I chose this image because I thought that it was a great example of the triadic color scheme. This image mostly consists of blue, yellow, and red. I thought that the way that the colors where represented really helped balance the image although the two sides of the image do contrast each other the image is still pleasing to the eye. To me the image almost looks as if on one side of the sidewalk it is fall and the other side it is winter. Maybe that was what the artist wanted was to make it almost a time that is right between fall and winter.

Texture

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

Texture the characteristic visual and tactile quality of the surface of a work of art resulting from the way in which the materials are used. Texture is usually something that can feel. When it comes to 2 dimensional arts you can create the idea of texture in an image. One way that we learned to use texture in class was to use line to create the illusion of texture. Texture can also be created through repeating a pattern making it more of a visual texture. This image was taken from the internet and it is a close up of some type of reptile. Having it an extreme close up shows the texture of the animal’s skin.  The skin looks like it would be really smooth but also bumpy at the same time. I also really enjoy the color in this image it shows how the colors fade into each other.

2.)  I really enjoyed being able to see all the different types of art work. It was really interesting to see the art work of my teachers or teachers that I know.

3.)  My favorite piece in the show would be the one with the buckets and the monster feet. I don’t remember who the artist was or what it was called. I really liked that it had many different mediums to the one art piece. I really liked that it had media with it that you could listen to and that each sound clip had a quote to correspond with it.

4.)  10

5.)  I thought it was really interesting to see all the works of art and I think that it was a good experience. I also think that it could come in handy when picking what professors you may want for classes.

Arts Extravaganza – Glass Blowing Demo

6-10 Friday December 5

Fine Arts Building

                        Exhibition* (non-course related)

1.) Arts Extravaganza was basically an open house of the all the art programs. One section in particular was the glass blowing. There were two different demos of the glass blowing. One demonstration was of larger pieces such as plates and vases. The other demonstration was smaller pieces for jewelry such as beads and pendants.

2.)  I really enjoyed the entire demonstration. As soon as I walked the room I was almost             mesmerized I thought it was so amazing that you can actually make plates by glass blowing. I knew that there are glass plates out there but I never really thought about the process. The smaller demonstration one of the demonstrators was making a flower and I thought it was so cool and again I never really thought about the process of all the glass figurines that I see in stores. I think that if I could I would have watched it all day. After seeing the demonstration it made me really want to learn how to do glass blowing.

3.)  I think the flower was what stood out it was so detailed and full of color.

4.)  10

5.)   I just thought it was really interesting to see how beads are made and how glass plates were made. I thought the overall experience was a lot of fun and entertaining.

Blog Entry #2

Monday, October 27th, 2008

So this was my part III of our first assignment. In the end of this assignment I felt that I had made a lot of progress. I am still not quite sure what theme my image is trying to portray. I think that may because I didn’t really have a clear theme in my head I just had images that I really wanted to use.

I think the larger images are somewhat more powerful than the rest but not by much. The one detail that sticks out in my mind is the largest butterfly. I was really happy with the way it turned out, from using the figure ground reversal technique.  I think that the smaller images such as the treble clef helped pull the piece together. The placements of the treble clefs were meant to help make the eye travel along the page and keep someone from getting stuck at one point.

Looking back I wish I would have developed some sort of theme for my project. I think that maybe I could have added another image to tie it all together to create some idea. I also wish I would have added a few more details in the tree and butterflies. Overall I think I could have done a much better job. Although that could be because I have learned more since then so I am able to realize all my mistakes that I didn’t see before.

Image Essay #5

Monday, October 27th, 2008

This image was taken from the internet and can be found at devianart.com. I thought that this image was a great example of dominance. Dominance is the principle of composition in which the heirarchal arangment of certain elements guide the viewes’s eye around the  picture plane. In this image the dominant structure would be the snowman/sandman. The bubbles in the image would be the subbordinant objects. They are small and translucent making them less noticable as the sandman. The sandman is really the main part of the piece but having the bubbles added to it gives the viewer some motion for the eye to move around the picture. Overall I loved this image, I really enjoyed the way that the sandman was created to look like it was almost a real melting snowman rather than made out of sand. The water from the ocean forming a puddle below the sandman really adds to the illusion that it is a melting snowman. When I looked at this piece it made me think of childhood. Every child loves to blow bubbles, make a snowman in the winter, and build sand creations when they go to the beach.
