The purpose of portfolios is to demonstrate our skills and abilities to write well. In english 111 and 112 we could have passed every paper we wrote that our instructor graded, but we could fail the portfolio grading, therefore failing english. To me that seems rediculous because if you passed it once, why shouldn’t you pass it again? All the instructors should be grading by the same rubrics and from past experiences it seems that they do not. However, I suppose portfolios do serve the purpose of showing off our skills that we have and can be expected of.
I think portfolios are intricate part of the learning process. It is important to do portfolios so that there will be a standard for evaluations. You do have some interesting points….GOOD WORK!!!!

I agree; I think portfolios can show off our skills and expectations people can have of us. I don’t have much to say about the ENG 111 and 112 portfolios. I didn’t agree with the use of these portfolios as assessment tools; I think they could have been used much more effectively. I don’t necessarily agree that all instructors should grade from the same rubrics but then again, I’m an education major and I see assessment differently than how others see it. But I think you made a good point both for an against the use of portfolios. Good job!

Posted March 6, 2009, 10:40 am #The portfolios in this class will be quite different from the GSW portfolio process, but it’s good to know the experiences people have had with portfolios so that when we begin talking about them I’m able to help reassure of how the experiences will actually be different.
Posted March 8, 2009, 12:11 pm #I’ve always found it strange that a student could pass every paper during a class but have their portfolio rejected during review… what’s up with that? I have had several residents who have had issues with that and I think that the blame should fall on the instructors and less on the students. I agree that portfolios do show off our skills and I also think that they provide us a way to see how our writing (or whatever is being chronicled) has improved/changed.
