The Extinction of my Blog… In Other Words, “The Last Blog” (Blog Number 5)

Filed under: Uncategorized — jpmckin @ 4:51 PM

Extinction was never really a topic that I considered much in my life. The first thing that came to mind when I heard that word when I was a child was “death”. I pictured things dying out and being gone forever. So, I chose to not think about it too much. Extinction now, contrary to before, scares me a lot less. Mostly becasue I have come to accept that everyone dies eventually and that everything happens for a reason. If the human race is supposed to become extinct then who am I to fret about it. I leave everything up to God, and I know that whatever is in his will will happen, no matter what I say or do. Also it talks in the Bible about the end of the world in the book of Revelation, thus I do believe that the human race will eventually become extinct. But I would also like to state that everything else will become extinct too because the earth will be destroyed. But there are some traits that humans have that I believe would help us combat extinction and that is the fact that the human race is geographically wide spread. We live almost everywhere on the globe, so we difinately have that going for us. But as a whole, humans are very selfish and destructive beings (when we want to be) and those traits would also lead to extinction. So, in conclusion I leave the fate of the human race up to God. Whatever he says goes. But I dont see this belief as an excuse to allow humans to do whatever they want and not take action if there are problems in the world, and there are definately problems. Humans have a duty to protect the earth that God made for us.

Scavenger? I Hope Not… (Blog Number Four)

Filed under: Uncategorized — jpmckin @ 4:31 PM

To start everything off on the right note, I LOVE DINOSAURS! I have always thought dinosaurs were cool and that has certainly not changed! My favorite movie and book is Jurassic Park, and they are the reason that I took this class! I am always willing to learn more about these AWESOME creatures!

Now that that is out of the way…

I  read an article about two Velociraptor teeth and a collection of heavily eroded Protoceratops bones found in Mongolia, China. According to new findings, the author suggests that Velociraptors, believed before to fight Protoceratops, were actually scavengers of this herbivore dinosaur. The author stated, “Bite marks on and around the herbivore’s jaws suggest the raptor did not kill the plant-eater, but was instead scavenging on its carcass.” The author believed that the Protoceratops was actually killed by some sort of other dinosaur before the Velociraptor began to feast on it.

This finding completely changes the idea that most people have of Velociraptors. Most people see these creatures to be skilled and deadly killers, at least based on the way that these beasts are portrayed in movies such as Jurassic Park. These findings are very  disappointing because they make the Velociraptor seem less cunning… and essentially much more lame. This article gives a new perspective on Velociraptors for paleontologists everywhere.

I feel that the article did a great job of giving information to the general public in an easy way to understand, but it gave very little evidence to support the supposed findings. The author seemed to jump to the conclusion that the Velociraptor was a scavenger. Maybe the Velociraptor actually did kill the Protoceratops, or maybe it was a pack of Velociraptors that killed the beast. Who knows?

Altogether I really enjoyed this article!

Just for fun,  a Velociraptor!

And God Said… Evolution! (Blog Number Three)

Filed under: Uncategorized — jpmckin @ 3:42 PM

I have been aware of the evolution contraversy almost my entire life. Being a the son a preacher, this has always been a topic that I have witnessed being debated. I was always taught to think of evolution as completely false because it goes against the Bible. Contrary to global warming, I have done much more research on this particular debate. I have written papers explaining the evolution and creationism debate and have seen many lectures and documentaries concerning this subject. To be blunt, I believe in the Bible. I dont believe that people came from apes or creatures of that nature. I take the Bible  literally when it comes to the story of Adam and Eve, and Adam was not created an ape that changed into a man. Adam was born a man. I do believe God can do whatever he wants when it comes to his creations. He can choose to create creatures and beings with the ability to change and adapt. God works in mysterious ways and evolution is mysterious. I value human worth and if someone were to say that I came from an ape and that I evolved just like other animals I would take offense to that. I believe humans are worth more than animals because God says so in the Bible and I was raised to believe the Bible. As I have further studied the Bible, my support of its teachings has increased. Evolution more than likely exists, but it is not controlled by natural selection, it is controlled by God.

Is it getting hot in here… or is it just me? (Blog Number Two)

Filed under: Uncategorized — jpmckin @ 3:57 PM

Ok, let’s just get to the point. I know pretty much nothing when it comes to Global Warming. If I had to rate how much I know on a ten point scale, with ten meaning that I knew everything and one being I know nothing, I would be at a 1. Like I said, I know nothing.

So, the little bit of information that I actually know about Global Warming comes from my parents, teachers, and peers. Mostly I have heard Global Warming described as an apocalyptic event which will kill us all.  The ice sheets will melt and flood the entire earth, sort of like a “Noah’s Ark” kind of deal. My teachers seem to think that it’s already happening and that we are doomed, but my parents think that it is a load of crap. With these completely conflicting views on the topic I barely know which side to believe.

I have heard that journalists give out “balanced” information on topics providing the reader with many different views on the subject. Journlists have been doing this concerning the topic of Global Warming. Well, I have not read any articles on Global Warming, so I wouldn’t know if this statement is true or not. But I would say that I agree with the idea that they should give “balanced” information. It is a journalist’s job to inform the public on topics that we don’t always hear about. Not only should they give the generally accepted view on a topic, but provide the reader with all possible views that may conflict with the accepted view. This is so that the reader can gain a more balanced understanding of the issue. If the journalist provides all views, they are more likely to hit on the actual truth. Just because there is a widely accepted view on an issue doesn’t mean it is the right one. For example, for a long time the idea that the earth was flat was the accepted view, but as we all know, this idea is false. I want to hear about an issue from all sides.

Who knows how/if Global Warming will affect us. But I won’t go as far as to say that it is completely to the fault of humanity.

But, like I said, I know nothing.

Tomorrow Will Be a Better Day (Blog Number One)

Filed under: Uncategorized — jpmckin @ 2:52 PM

The essay from This I Believe that I found to be the most moving was the essay called, “Tomorrow Will Be a Better Day” by Josh Rittenberg. This essay is written by a sixteen year old boy who over hears his father talking about how he believes that the future that his generation is leaving for his son will be worse than his. But through reminiscing by looking at old photos of his grandparents the youth is able to find hope for a better future. This essay moved me because I have always been optimistic about my future and the future of the world. I realize that people do stupid things and sometime tragedy happens, but I believe there is always a light at the end of the tunnel, there just has to be. The value that I believe this essay expresses is hope. Hope is very powerful. I have found that throughout my life no matter what I am going through, if I have hope I will always achieve happiness. This essay also gives me a sense of relief to not worry about the struggles that I am going through because in the end everything will work its self out. This essay helps me keep positive and I liked it.
