Reflection on 1710

Coming into college I was very nervous about meeting other filmmakers and finding out how to get involved in making films. How have I grown as filmmaker in 1710. I feel like  haven’t grown much. I have learned how to be better with the technical parts, but being in this course I feel more driven apart from the film majors than when I didn’t know them. No one wants to tell stories of experiences of marginalized people. They only want to use their films to impress other people. That is why I didn’t work with any of the others.  I still believe in my film manifesto, but I also learned that my fellow film majors very accepting to people with differing backgrounds. My favorite project were the color project and tone project.

Screen Analysis: Night Catches Us

For the screen analysis assignment, I saw the film Night Catches Us (Tanya Hamilton, 2010) at the opening night of the Tuesdays At The Gish series. I choose to see this film because it was made with a black cast and crew. The director of the film was a black woman which is rare to see in the American film industry. Those three aspects of the film alone attracted me to it.

The film is directed by Tanya Hamilton and is about a black man and woman in the 1970s who had ties with the black panthers. The film contains a lot of ideological messages since it is about The Black Panther Party and how it affected black people before, during, and after the government dismantlement or the party. The film is about an ex-panther who left the party after being accused of snitching when a local chapter leader was set up and killed by the feds. The late leader leaves behind a daughter and wife who talk charge of the community and use their house as a community center for people in the neighborhood.

The film is beautifully shot. It takes a very different look on 70s inspired films. Films from the seventies about the BPP( Black Panther Party) are usually over exaggerated with the expression of the characters’ narratives. This is a common element used in Blaxploitation film that reflected how people in the period felt at that time. The film is heavily influenced by the elements of the L.A. Rebellion. The film also focuses on the everyday struggles of the people it follows. The film focuses a lot on nature. A lot of the scenes in the film are shot in a forest like area.

Final Film Details

I am filming the project by myself. The film is a short biographical drama about me dealing with social anxiety. The film will be shot in black and white for the added effect it brings with storytelling. I shot the film with a canon 60d and 70d dslr with a manfrotto tripod. The film’s duration would be about three minutes long. The logistical challenges are the problems that I am facing with filming myself.

Film Manifesto

Many films today are lacking the depth that allows for it to be considered art. There are no clear ideologies encoded into the film. They lack anything for the viewers to be able to think about. Todays films aren’t trying to connect the viewer to the world or its people in it. Films shouldn’t be made to please anyone except the filmmaker.

1.) A film shouldn’t leave the audience with hope at the ending of the film

2.) One or more of the protagonist in the film should die.

3.) No more than three percent of the dialogue should be comedic.

4.) The film should be heavily narrated

High and Low Visual Intensity

This is a high contrast photo because of the differences in the color pallet of the photo. The photo is also a high contrast photo which adds to the visual intensity. Since the photo is using such prominent color that clash and are very striking to the eye. These elements come together to make the photo have a high visual intensity. Photo by Rwd Photography

The second photo is an example of low visual intensity because of the lack of color contrast in the to the photo. The photo is very soft and contains nothing that is attracting the eye to the photo. The photo contains little to no color variation, the colors seem to be very similar. Photo by geros on vimeo.

Low key portrait photo taken in daylight by using a small aperture and low ISO settings, plus a neutral density filter on the lens. The flash was set to full power and close to the subject. This combination of settings and proximity of the flash to the subject gives a photo where the subject is lit but the background is dark, despite being taken in daylight.

Evelyn was sitting in the diner just minutes down the street from where she grow up. She didn’t start her night at the diner, it was actually far from what she had previously planned for the night. Evelyn wanted to attend the loco disco then end the night at the jazz bar. She had thought of the perfect night out this for a new guy she had met at the disco the week before. His name was Luke, he was everything that she thought that she wanted. Before the dancing and drinks, they were supposed to meet and eat a light dinner.

Evelyn had planned to go out with Luke, but those plans were foiled when she arrived at his house to pick him up. She had driven to his house and knocked on the door, but Luke wasn’t the one that answered. It was a child. The child looked at Evelyn and ran back into the house. Evelyn left and ran back to the car fearing that whoever the child was getting was a lover of Luke. She got in the car and quickly parked farther up the street.  She looked up and in the rear view mirrors she seen another man answer the door.

My goals and dreams

Hello, my name is Janel Roach and I’m a first-year student. I love watching film, and more than that I love making it. I had my own VCR at the age of five and because of that, I was exposed to multiple types of films that I grew to love today.  Growing up I never saw anyone on television and film that looked like me. That made me feel really crappy as a child and made me continuously doubt myself when trying to envision myself as a filmmaker because of the lack of representation. My reason for being here is to get a more in-depth knowledge and experience with film that I had not before, and also to bring more race and cultural representation in film.

Out of all the genres of film, horror is definitely my favorite. It doesn’t need to be taken seriously. I watch approximately four horror films a week, that I cannot recall the names or even the plot.  I enjoy all types of horror, my favorites being vampire and demon flicks. My long term goals are to become a successful filmmaker that helps provide more representation in the film industry. Although my goals might be very serious, I still want to have small goals for Applied Aesthetics. My goals for this course are to be able to make films that meet all the required guidelines that are decent. Through the projects made in the course, I would encode a serious issue that is commonly ignored in society.
