The paid 10-week internship is a wonderful opportunity for budding journalists to experience the hustle and bustle and excitement of a big city newsroom. SPJ LEADS: Creating new opportunities to grow

SPJ‘s Pulliam/Kilgore Freedom of Information Internships are incredible ways to spend your summer. One intern works at SPJ headquarters in Indianapolis while the second works with SPJ’s First Amendment legal counsel in Washington, D.C. The internships expose students to freedom of information issues, advocacy efforts, journalism legislation and a variety of other SPJ programs and initiatives. 2010 AAF-Cleveland Career Day

Our 2010 Career Day is set for Monday, December 20 beginning at 8:00am at The Plain Dealer located at 1801 Superior Avenue. You’ll find attached a poster that we’re asking you to distribute to your MarCom students and also ask that you pass the word around campus alerting students of this informative day. Topics this year include: “A Day In The Life”, “Attitude of Gratitude,” and many others. We’ll also conduct resume, portfolio and social media page critiques as well as conduct mock interviews. One of our special speakers for the day is Plain Dealer Publisher, Terry Eggers.

It’s an intensive training program delivering tangible strategies that will improve a student’s capabilities in finding employment in the industry. I hope you’ll take the opportunity to encourage your students to attend. I’ve attached a poster for your convenience.

JOURNALISM IN GHANA 2011

As the academic year hits the midway point goes on and our thoughts turn to the holidays and winter recess, I wanted to bring to your attention our 2011 Reporting Africa program for some of your students.

Applications are now available for our six-week immersion program gives student journalists an opportunity to get a good taste of international reporting while still in a structured setting.

The program is based out of New York University’s Ghana campus and students get to report using the whole country as the coverage area.

Please share the attached e-flyer with colleagues and students who might want to avail themselves of this unique opportunity. It’s never too early to start thinking about next summer’s opportunities to get your students international clips and bodies of work. The program runs from May 30-July 8 next year.

OWAA offers scholarships for college students

MISSOULA, Mont. – Outdoor Writers Association of America will be accepting applications for its Bodie McDowell scholarship program. Scholarships are for the 2011-12 academic year. Established in 1966, more than $100,000 in scholarships has been awarded since 2002. Approximately $20,000 in scholarships will be awarded in 2011. Each scholarship includes a one-year student membership with OWAA.

The Bodie McDowell scholarship program is open to undergraduate and graduate-level college students pursuing a degree in an outdoor communications field. Undergraduate applicants must be entering their junior or senior years of study; graduate student applicants must have at least one remaining year of study.

Benefits of OWAA Student membership include a one-year subscription to OWAA’s magazine, Outdoors Unlimited, containing craft improvement and communication news articles, access to member discounts and job listings, the chance to earn conference registration scholarships and more.

PULLIAM/KILGORE INTERNSHIP

A national award is a great way to help student resumes stand out when applying for jobs, and so is an internship with SPJ. Every summer, SPJ offers two highly-coveted internships to qualified student journalists. The Pulliam/Kilgore Internship is a paid internship ($400/week for 10 weeks) that focuses on freedom of information and the First Amendment. One internship is based in Indianapolis (SPJ National Headquarters) and the other is based in Washington, D.C. For complete details, please visit the internship Web page.
