Sports Journalism Institute Internship

Application deadline is Nov. 8, 2013.

An internship opportunity for current undergraduates interested in sports journalism (broadcast, print, photography, or digital). This comes to us by way of Justin Seiter of the Asian American Journalists Association and is for students who may be interested in a paid summer internship with the Sports Journalism Institute.

Dow Jones News Fund 2014 Summer Intern Applications Now Online

PRINCETON, N.J. (Sept. 30, 2013) — College juniors, seniors and graduate students are invited to apply to the Dow Jones News Fund for summer 2014 internships in digital, news and sports editing and business reporting. The application deadline is Nov. 1.  More than 60 media companies hired 120 interns in 2013.

Interns will be trained at New York University, Arizona State University, the University of Missouri, Western Kentucky University, Temple University, Penn State University, the University of Nebraska and the University of Texas before reporting to work.  News media are required to pay at least $350 per week for a minimum of 10 weeks.

The Fund covers travel costs to and from training then to newsrooms. Students who return to school after a successful internship will receive $1,000 college scholarships. Applicants must take a one-hour business reporting or editing exam in addition to submitting the application forms. Posters, brochures and tests have been mailed to professors on college campuses who have volunteered to serve as test monitors.

The results are still coming in but several 2013 interns scored extensions and even full-time jobs with their summer employers. Mark Sanchez of the University of Maryland was hired on the sports desk of the New York Post; Brooks Johnson from Montana is a page designer at the Idaho Falls Post Register; Andrea Ordonez of Hofstra continues to work at Newsday in New York and Mallorie Sullivan of Ohio University got an extension at the Virginian-Pilot.

Participating news organizations have included The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, WashingtonPost.com, Dow Jones Newswires, The Denver Post, Los Angeles Times, Thomson Reuters, Media General, The Journal News, Detroit News, The Tampa Bay Times, Indianapolis Star, the Minneapolis Star Tribune and many others.

Scripps Howard Foundation Semester in Washington Internship

The Scripps Howard Foundation is looking for curious, energetic college juniors and seniors studying journalism to report from Washington during the spring and summer terms. Interns are paid a stipend and provided free housing in furnished apartments.

Interns find, report and write stories for the web-based Scripps Howard Foundation Wire, take photos, create slide shows and shoot and edit video. Semester in Washington takes six interns in the 14-week spring term and six in the 10-week summer term. Applicants with multimedia experience will be given preference.

A seventh intern works for the Hispanic Link News Service in the spring and fall. Applicants should be juniors or seniors with previous internship experience or extensive work with student media.

Program dates and application deadlines for Semester in Washington and Hispanic Link internships:

  • Spring 2014: Jan. 6 to April 11. Application deadline: Nov. 1, 2013. Program includes a stipend of $2,660 and free housing.
  • Summer 2014: June 9 to Aug. 15. Application deadline: Nov. 1, 2013. Program includes a stipend of $1,900 and free housing.
  • Hispanic Link interns: same deadlines, stipend and free housing

Applicants may also indicate a preference for fall. The deadline for that program is March 15.

The program includes international interns, who are chosen by the International Center for Journalists.

Fall Internship Telex Communications (Toledo)

Telex Communications in Toledo accepting applications for fall interns. Interns will have the opportunity to write articles, copy edit, take photos, format reports, and more.

Telex Communications has three monthly publications: Toledo Business Journal, Lake Erie West Manufacturing & Construction News, and Development News. Our coverage area mainly includes northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan.

Our papers focus on regional economic development. Some of our special section topics, which interns will typically write for, include: finance, healthcare,  continuing education, conference facilities, green technology, machining and tooling, material handling, transportation logistics, industrial equipment, etc.

PR Intern Fine Arts Center Galleries BGSU

The Fine Arts Center Galleries are seeking public relations interns for fall (and spring and summer) 2013/14 to help promote several outstanding exhibitions. These are volunteer positions with a good opportunity for diverse experiences in public relations, marketing and event planning. Responses to this experience from previous interns have been very positive, and some of our past interns have gone on to positions with museums and art centers.

Public Relations Interns are responsible for working with the Gallery Director and the Galleries team to compose and publish/distribute timely marketing/public relations material about the exhibitions. This includes news releases, public service announcements, facebook and web updates, maintaining the online Gallery calendar and updating files of Gallery activities. Writing ability, creative thinking and initiative are key, while basic computer and record keeping skills are also required.

These are flexible positions in terms of scheduling, and have the benefit of being on campus. They may receive 1-3 hours of credit, under the supervision of an SMC faculty member.  Interested students may contact the Gallery Director at jnathan@bgsu.edu.
