9/4 – Summary

For today, I’d like you to begin drafting a summary of your chosen text for the Critique essay – here are some notes I will explain in more detail in class…

Summary
INQUIRY – 144-151

– key claims
– relevant examples
– thesis for the argument as a whole
– context for argument or text

brevity – compressing the text

completeness – getting all of the author’s main points

objectivity – not agreeing or disagreeing, but accurately
representing/translating

not an analysis, but allows that analysis to happen because of a fuller
understanding of the text’s meaning…

Writing a Summary:

Reread the text
Write one-sentence summaries of sections
Write the author’s thesis
Combine the thesis and sentences to produce a summary draft
Revise and condense if needed
