I chose to attend the speech by Colin Beavan for my common reading experience. I was skeptical at first because I was not sure how he would be in person compared to his personality in the book. However, I was impressed with his speech. I liked that he didn’t focus his entire speech around the book and what happens in the book, but rather stories and his own experiences and life now. I also liked that he explained the process of his ideas and motivation to actually complete this project and write the book. Overall I like him more in person than I did in the book.

I was able to participate in the common reading experience celebration by going to see author Colin Beavan speak. It was nice to hear an author who was a very good at public speaking because I have listened to others and they didn’t speak very well. I thought it was very interesting that he decided not to talk about his book that much. He mostly discussed about his beliefs, his ideas on why he wrote the book, and what he is still doing to help out. His mannerisms and voice sounded very different compared to what I imagined in the No Impact Man book. When giving his speech, he mentioned that we should all wok together and utilize our individual and unique talents to improve our world. I’m glad he brought up this point because that is one of my beliefs. It was very fun to go hear him speak and I hope he can come back soon to talk to our campus again.

The dove commercial really struck home for me. It bothers me that people only think beauty is fake and full of makeup. I wish that I never started to wear makeup because now people expect a higher standard from me when I want to just be natural. People expect beauty to be full of makeup and its not fair to average women.

Watching these videos and listening to the pod cast is basically what I was writing about in my second essay! I wish that I could have used that radio interview to support my paper because I knew that the media and advertisers do those things to get you hooked on the product. It is a very scary reality that we live in where we can be influenced without realizing it. I just hope that it doesn’t get to the point where they can manipulate the part of our brain that is self control.

In the podcast she went into depth about what we as consumers, and people in general, do with and without thinking. She was taught by her mother that she should not cave into advertising and what they are trying to sell. This went along with the video we watched about Dove. We see the ads and the things on t.v. that appear in a very beautiful way, but the reality of it that you are not getting what you are seeing. Media is manipulating our minds to believe everything we see or hear. In the podcast she is explaining that if you program your mind to reject what the media is trying to feed you, you then can do it without thinking about it.

The video and podcast made me realize that the media makes people look unreal and not real. The podcast showed how easily people can be manipulated by what the media says.

I thought the advertisment by Dove was pretty alarming. I knew the models for ads had to be pretty from the start, but I thought after all the makeup and hair that would be enough. I never knew that they touched up the faces on the computer so much to make it barely resemble the lady from the beginning. It’s sad that that’s what beautiful is today, something unattainable by normal people.

I thought the videos were very interesting. It saddens me to see how the media portrays beauty to our society, and how unreal it actually is. The children in society, girls and boys, need a better, uplifting image to grow up with. It is also strange to think about how our minds make subconscious connections before we actually become aware of them; and how advertisers work to actually make sure that, that happens.

after watching the youtube videos I think it is crazy how the perception of somebody could be almost a lie. that thats not even that actual person. I know that people want to be like certain people they see but if the perception of that person isn’t themselves then it is all just a lie.

I knew advertising had an effect on our brains. One thing I always think is interesting is how bad advertisements work. Sometimes the advertisements that annoy you the most are the best because you have the most emotional connection with them. I think that like the girl said on NPR it is your own decision to actually believe an advertisement and buy a product.
