You are expected to give an in-depth analysis of both essays. Have your audience and writing situation in mind when you create responses. Please cite the way you write your essays when you refer to examples or particular details from the essays.

 1. Read “More Testing, More Learning” by Patrick O’Malley on pp. 330-333.  Explain how the organization, development,  and rhetorical stategies work.

2. Read “Win-Win Flexibility” by Karen Kornbluh on pp. 334-337 and the commentary on pp. 338-340. What strategies does the author use to make readers believe that the proposal works? Give 2-3 examples. Remember to cite when you use examples or words from the text.

    1) O’Malley’s essay, “More Testing, More Learning”, is organized into several sections, starting with an introduction and background which then becomes the focal point of the essay, increasing the number of tests and quizzes students have as opposed to only a few large exams. He then shifts toward an alternative solution and follows that with a conclusion. He develops his ideas via words like could, should and might to showcase his implementation process. He rephrases his thesis in the body paragraphs and transitions into the alternate solution which he then rejects. In conclusion he restates his topics. His rhetorical strategy, asking readers a question that isn’t meant to be directly answered, draws them into the remainder of the essay.

    2) Strategies Kornbluh uses to make readers believe that the proposal works include:
    *presenting the proposal clearly
*providing solutions to any problems that may arise from the proposal
*showing alternative solutions to the problem

    1. O’Malley’s essay is very well developed. He picked a topic that many college students can relate to and he provided a very good solution to this problem. His transitions and arguments to support his topic are very well developed and very well organized. His strategies work for describing his solution because he backs them up very well with his arguments and his information about the topic. Overall his essay is very well done and his organizations and development is well executed.

    2. Kornbluh has many strategies to make his readers believe that his solution will work. Kornbluh presents his theory in a very developed and informational way as well as backing up she solution with information that makes sense. She also has great background information as well.

1)O’Malley’s essay was really well developed. He attracted the reader in the beginning by asking frequently asked questions that every college student has probably asked themselves. His topic was really relatable. He used great transitions and his paper was really well organized. He used a rhetorical question to introduce his readers’ objections. Then he refuted the objections just like we have been doing in GSW. Overall this paper was well developed and well done.

2)2. In “Win-Win Flexibility” by Karen Kornbluh, the author uses strategies to make the readers believe that the proposal works. She divides her paper into three sections allowing the reader to better understand where she is coming from. She gives a lot of background information and gives several plausible solutions. I really liked the possible solution about how both the employee and employer wouldu have to meet and discuss “details on the change in work, the effect on the employer, and solutions to any problems caused to the employer” (par 3). This solution makes both sides happy. The employee will be able to get their much needed time off, and the employer will benefit also. The employer will be provided with a written application allowing them to be prepared.

I like your response. I am happy you grow as a writer and a reader. The critical thinking ability helps with writing, too.

Great ideas, but readers will understand you better if you include some specific strategies or examples from the texts.
