it has become a phenomenon in the past couple of years. it is easy to use because you dont interupt people by texting like you do with a phone call. i think that it caught on with teens and young adults as a way to talk to their friends easier.

I want to write my paper on the recent obsession for women to be thin and the image that many girls want to obtain. Some possible causes are the fact that many women want to look like models or those that they see in the media. Also another cause is women feel as though being skinny makes them better looking and therefore they can become obsessed with that image. This trend can be dangerous and not healthy.

A possible topic for my third essay is the need to be thin in today’s society. Every where we look there is something telling us how we should look and dress. Society is always telling us to be skinny and beautiful. Young girls especially are under tramendous pressure to look like the models and actresses on televsion today. Many young girls are developing eating disorders and are becoming extremely self-conscious do to the way they are suppossed to look. Overall, although it is not healthy to be over weight, it is also not healthy to be too skinny which is the image society is protraying on us today.

A trend/phenomena that I would like to explore is teenage mothers. There are many causes/reasons for this trend. While the majority of the time it happens on accident, some girls actually try to get pregnant. Maybe they feel that having a child will make them seem more grown up. Others may want the extra attention from family members. Some girls may feel that it will give them a stronger connection with their boyfriend.

One good trend that I might like to explore is the trend that has been happening lately of people (usually teenagers) using offencive words in every day language. For instance, saying ‘That’s Gay.” when refering to something that is stupid is very offencive towards homosexuals. This might be a good topic to explore because it is a fairly recent trend and also something that has not been discussed a lot.
Another topic that might be good to use is the trend of what a male and famale body type should look. With this topic, the dicussion could be what is concidered cool to wear and look like now and what is the ideal body and look for a person to be concidered beautiful.

I am thinking about doing underage drinking. It seems that underage drinking has been a trend for quite some time but in the past few years there has been a change in attitude by those that are not underage. I would like to explore the fact that even though people look down upon underage drinking, there are still people un 21 drinking on a normal basis.

Sounds interesting. But racism is a broad and contested topic. I am sure you can find a lot of sources. The challenge for you is to relate to college sport. Please remember your own experience also counts. You can also interview other people who had similar or different experience.
By the way, is your topic a trend or a phenomenon? How can you convince your audience? You are required to use a source to support it.
I would suggest you prepare two topics now, and do some preliminary research and see which works for this assignment.

Ashley, good start. I agree Facebook is popular and is a new trend. You won’t have problem finding sources to prove it exists.
The causes you give here seem to be possible causes. Make sure you find a hidden and rooted cause. See if sources can give you some ideas, such as causes related to social and cultural perspectives.

Interesting topic, and no people will doubt its existence, but you are supposed to prove it with at least a source.
“Making life easy” is a big attraction. But why texting? Research probably can answer your question. Bring your excitement and questions to our next class, or email me.

Good topic. But when you write and try to find sources, try to avoid ideas that people have already known. Pressure, to me, could be a cause to many girls.

Good start. But I need some specifics to understand the topic well, because as an outsider everything is new to me. For example, I have no idea of the “problems” you are going to address. I am also aware class time is limited, so it didn’t not allow you to think and write more. You and Kristen will be moving in two directions. See if what I said in response to her post help you as well.
You may start with preliminary research. Finding credible and relevant sources are important.

Both are good topics. But it seems it is easier for you to approach the second topic, because you are one of the people who live under the pressure. You insights and personal experience can support your points.
At the beginning, having two possible topics is what I usually do, especially at the invention stage. See if your thoughts and the sources can help you to choose one interesting and managable topic.

Your topic is about a social phenomenon, I think. Interesting and I am sure a lot of readers want to read more about your essay. You have listed some causes. Good job. Now probably it is hard to decide which one is the most plausible cause. Write more. The more ideas you put down, the more judgment you are going to make. In this process, you evaluate these ideas and can come to a reasonable decision.
Besides, don’t forget your sources. Experts are there talking about the same or similar topic, from the same or different perspective. They will lend help, too.
Go finding sources.

Both topics are interesting. They tell me that you observe what is happening around you. This is a good habit, and addressing problems in life gives you true feelings and help you to write well.
But please consider the first topic again. Do you think it is notable? Do sources support its existence as the assignment sheet spells out?

The phenomenon you choose fits the assignment. But this is a debated and much discussed topic. Of course, you can approach the issue from different or new perspectives. Make sure you find possible and the most plausible causes. Time in class was limited, so I understand you could not include as many details as you liked. Please find sources and see if you can find something what helps spark ideas.

I think a possible topic could be the usage and legality of cannabis (marijuana). There’s a lot of documentaries and writing about it plus it’s a fairly controversial topic.

Experience shows this is a very complicated and demanding topic, and usually four to five pages cannot make your points clear. Besides, consider if it is a trend or a phenomenon. I agree it is a controversial topic though.
I suggest you look at the if you can find a topic that you and your intended audiece like from the list in our textbook. I am sorry I don’t have SMG with me, so I cannot give you the page numbers. That part appears after readings.

i would like to write about children soldiers. Like in africa and how we have that meeting for “invisible soldiers”. I would like to look in to why countries train their children and send them out to war.
