Background
In the spirit of creating open scholarship, we are asking participants who create video and audio files for materializing reading to publish those files on Internet Archive (archive.org). The Internet Archive is a non-profit organization that aims to preserve digital artifacts in a free-to-access library.
When submitting your materializing reading drafts for review, we’ll ask you to include links to your archived material. These links will be used to embed your media on our Graduate Reading Exchange website at publication.
Accessibility
To improve the accessibility of your media, we will be requiring transcripts for audio files and closed caption .srt files for videos for publication.
Creating a Text Transcript (Audio)
You can submit your audio transcript with timestamps as a text or Word document.
Creating an SRT File (Video)
There are many options for creating an SRT file.
If your institution uses Canvas, you can create and edit an SRT file in Canvas Studio. Here is a step-by-step tutorial for using Canvas Studio that Michelle created for her students (https://archive.org/details/cc_20240302). After creating the captions in Canvas Studio, click on the three dot menu next to the caption language to download the .srt file to your computer.
If you do not have access to Canvas, you can create an .srt file manually with a text editor (https://www.3playmedia.com/blog/create-srt-file/).
